Click to view entire descripton??? What the heck???

Has anyone seen this new layout for listings? I have a button on my last listing called 'click button to view entire description'.

There is a completely blank screen unless one clicks that button. There is NO description of the item for sale until you click this button and then the description opens in a separate window.

What is this all about - an I in a test group?

Heaven forbid someone might make a sale over the three day holiday.

With eBay's continual emphasis on defining your item using Item Specifics (which includes the "Condition" text area) and the new UPC requirement I wonder if the "Full Description" text area will eventually be retired ?

I agree - but eBay's recent ACTIONS would indicate they have lost interest in the "old" mostly auction-based eBay which was the best collectibles site in the world full of mostly small sellers providing a way for buyers to get virtually anything !

EBAY WILL NEVER BECOME ANOTHER AMAZON HOWEVER MUCH THEY TRY BECAUSE:

1. Amazon has a completely different business model, selling mostly new items that they hold physical stock of - even in their Sellers Marketplace many items are FBA (Fulfilled By Amazon).

2. Even if eBay copied Amazon's business model (with massive warehouses and holding of millions of items of stock) Amazon have had many years head start and also a top-notch reputation for service (in my buyer experience).

Re: Click to view entire descripton??? What the heck???

I make custom made items of jewelry.  I could never fit my descriptions into eBay's "cookie cutter" specifis areas.  The way I look at it is eBay is supposed to be a VENUE.  They are not supposed to be taking over all of my business.  I pay the anywhere from $700 to $900 each month in fees and commissions so CR_P like this should never happen!

NONE of my descriptions come up in their new "SEE FULL DESCRIPTION" window.  Instead, you see this (with a 1/4" thin window of test.

Re: Click to view entire descripton??? What the heck???

I just don't believe this has come back to haunt us again. Why DO eBay want to make life so difficult for their sellers - we are the ones who pay their bills.

I sell vintage items, and it is very important that buyers see my full descriptions so that they are aware of any defects or blemishes. Now they won't see them, and the newbies (and possibly some of the oldbies!) won't click on 'see full item description', and so I can see the SNAD claims beginning to pile up very quickly.

I have also already started to get people asking questions that are answered in the first line of my description. My first reaction was to think that they must be idiots, then I realised that the idiots were eBay, because they are pulling this ludicrous stunt again. It happened to me back in Feb (with the same consequences as now), and now they're doing it again.

To make things worse I list with auctiva (a paid service), and it hides ALL of the auctiva details, including the up to 24 very detailed images I post. The people at auctiva must be absolutely hopping mad (like I am). And I am now wasting my time taking so many pictures (up to 500 a day) in order to achieve maximum transparency to comply with eBay's own rules...

There is an old saying that goes 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. It would be a massive exaggeration to say that eBay wasn't broke (it's almost terminally damaged, mainly, it seems, by the people who run it), but this certainly wasn't what needed doing to fix it.

I wonder if they will see the error of their ways again, or if we are stuck with this garbage for ever?

Re: Click to view entire descripton??? What the heck???

I am been opted into the latest hide descriptions fiasco as well.

As a buyer, I do not appreciate having to hunt and click to see what should already be shown, the description.

As a seller I have noticed more questions from buyers that could easily be found in the description. This can of course happen, but will happen a lot more when eBay hides the description from them.

I have also had a buyer say they did not want to pay for something that they won, because they found the description (which was hidden) after they won the item.

eBay continues to repeat this same failed experiment. eBay is excelling at failing.

eBay is a shell of what it once was, and to me an embarrassment.

Re: Click to view entire descripton??? What the heck???

Ebay does not ask you for your opinion when they show you their new plan for the future. Hide-the-description feels like an almost done deal. I hope that they will reconsider. It is a complete embarrassment.

It is more than a description; it is how sellers brand and market their business. We are not all the same. That is what used to make us great. The buying experience would depend on the seller's marketing, follow-up and delivery of goods. Each of us had a chance to excel. Though we operate under one umbrella, it was once the power of our hard work, dedication and long-hours that made an impact on our business model and the level of success we achieved. Then there were the changes. Years of it. Some of our best sellers are gone and doing business outside of ebay by using multiple venues and their own sites.

Griff said something about hoping that ebay would get back to its greatness. I think we all want that. We may not agree on the approach.

Cataloging- This helps in Adwords campaigns for Google. Basically, ebay pays google money so that ads will run for certain items.

How will cataloging work on the actual ebay site? I fear that it will work like this; I am searching for a new gadget. I click on your image of what I am looking for. Next, I see a picture of it. Underneath that picture, I see a few random sentences that are out-of-order and make you look bad. That is the auto-fill above the hidden pop-up box for the full description. However, I don't need to bother with any of that. I see pictures from China of the gadget at a lower price.

Because your marketing page was taken over by spam, I have no idea the actual item pictured is the one that I want to buy. I also have no idea that you double box and insure your packages. I do not even realize that if I contact you, before I complete my sale, I can save by ordering multiple items from your store. I don't know all of that because the site looks like spam, and I am now bying from China. I do not like pop-up boxes or spam. So, I am just going by the cost and pictures. So, did I make a good buy? Who knows. I could have spent more in your store and had my things shipped securely if I would have saw the description.

"Oh, I don't read the description." Honestly, it amazes me how so many people say they do not when they do without realizing it. For example, I will hear this about other sellers, "I don't need to hear that the dress is from a pet-free home. I don't even bother reading the description. I just buy what I like. Then how do you know it is from a pet-free home?

How you market your business is up to you. The great thing about that is that the option should be up to you. People often scan what is important to them. For example, if your child suffers with allergies maybe it is important that the books you are buying are coming from a smoke-free home. So, you will scan the listing for that information before you buy. Each seller is not the same and each buyer is not the same.

Do you do custom work? I see why your prices are higher than the big box store. I am getting a treasure.......because I see your description. It is clear that you take great pride in your work. I love the details. I am tired of mass-produced deals. Thanks for bringing your art to this platform. If I would have not have seen the description, I would have missed that. I like how everything is seen on the page. No one likes pop-ups.

Search Results that look and Feel like Spam Will Rank the Site Low by Google- If I type in "blouse size 10" on ebay, I will be asked if I mean "short." This is a total embarrassment. "Short" is not an article of clothing. Shorts are, but that is still wrong. Either way, if I click on the link of what ebay thinks I want, I will a get dresses, shorts, shoes, and whatever else it can vomit up.

If I type in bouse size 10 into google search, I get nothing from ebay. This is as it should be. This is because the ebay search is what it is- I am asked if I mean "short." Google has deemed it unworthy for the first page.

If I type dresden lace into google, ebay is on the first page. If I type it into ebay search, ebay does not ask me if I mean "short." So, the page does not look like spam to Google.

This post is turning into a book. I am sorry about that. I will just hit one more thing. I have never seen a great business decide that "return shipping" is what they want to build their business model on. It sets up the buyer to expect the worst in all of us. It gives the impression that ebay has to police us because we have no idea what we are putting into our boxes. However, the buyers should not worry because ebay will save the day. What? That is the marketing campaign?

Do you remember when WE set up Our Buyers Expectations. How about when people went from selling items in a garage to making millions. Now, we don't know what we are doing. Great.

We can all just look alike and loose our identity to big box and be seen as a garage sale of junk. Unless- there is change that starts from the ground up, and not the top down, I don't see how things will change... I think we can see that change is needed thank to poor sales, low views and more big box ideas.

I agree with Griff in that I am hoping for something different- a great place that is a site-destination. A place that is as unique as we all are. Is it too late, Griff?

Re: Click to view entire descripton??? What the heck???

Mike, I think I am over it. The first round was a test for input... or so they say.

In the new "test," they don't ask for input. They are not investing all of this money to Not make this happen.

Griff did not even know about the second or third round of testing two weeks ago.  He knows when testing ends now.

The bigger question is when is the complete role out and how much will you be paying for it in fee hikes.

I had no idea that they are changing backgrounds on some images that sellers put up. It might be smart to make the changes to white before that big role out happens too. I can see the new fall update in my head. lol

"Sellers great news! We have decided to make sure you look like your competition. This new marketing plan will help the buyer's experience by attracting business to your stores. We also are now insisting that you only use white backgrounds. So, if you had your milk glass collection set in black, you will need to retake your photos. Also, do not forget your product identifiers. Store fees will go up to $75 for a basic store and it tripples from there. Do not worry, we will still hide the description at no additional charge. Put everything you can in the "condition" box. We need your extra store space to run ads. This is an exciting time for us."

Re: Click to view entire descripton??? What the heck???

I read a post in one of Griff's chats about it.. A seller was talking about the background of her images. She said that they had been altered by ebay to improve the buyer's experience, and she wanted to be opted out of the test. I went back to find it, and it was Not there. Totally- disregard my comment. I have lost my mind or the post was deleted for being insane. lol

I noticed yesterday that the weakly chat's post count changed a couple times, so posts did get deleted.

As to the photo BG changes, I've read a few posts here and there over the last few months about it, but evidently ebay is starting to ramp it up. It has something to do with making it easier for mobile users, same as hiding descriptions (at least that's ebay's story).
