Cancellation reason "Order placed by mistake"

I'm just curious, how common is it for buyers to claim they ordered something by mistake? It seems like a frequent reason given, and I'm not sure I understand how you could order by mistake. I've also noticed that buyers get to keep the positive feedback left despite canceling orders.

I've made online purchases for so many years and never ordered any by mistake.

Re: Cancellation reason "Order placed by mistake"

I catch a few cancellation requests. For my wares, it is usually a legit mistake on a model/part-number. Someone in purchasing made a mistake..... who knows?

I process them asap and just tell the buyer to stop back by anytime.

Much better as a cancellation rather than a return.

I don't remember the last time, if ever, I had to request a cancellation.

Keeping Feedback......  who cares.....

Re: Cancellation reason "Order placed by mistake"

It sometimes happens where a seller ships it that afternoon(Sometimes I am going out just as an order comes in and I ship in...within minutes.)

And the buyer sees it has been shipped and does the 'order placed by mistake'.

It's an old trick...item shipped and now wants to cancel.

I mean, do we have voice recognition where we say buy it on the computer or iPhone?...and we bought it?

So now I do the shipped before shipping it...no tracking on cheapo items...so I can ship my items a few days after I click on 'shipped'.

Anything under $50.00 from a good buyer(Yes, I check their feedbacks.) doesn't need tracking as well as 'freight forward' of my items.

Re: Cancellation reason "Order placed by mistake"

Unless you are a somnambulist or suffer from a multiple personality disorder it is not possible.

I think it is just a gracious way (provided by this platform) for a buyer to back out of a transaction with a minimum of embarrassment.

Would anyone rather the choices be:

1. I am bipolar

2. I was intoxicated

3. I had just watched Joanne Woodward in The Three Faces of Eve

4. I had nothing better to do

????????????

Doesn't matter. I am all for permitting an individual a graceful "out."

All sellers would rather know the deal is off prior to shipment.  Wouldn't they?

5. I was using someone else's computer. They signed in with "Keep Me Signed In Unless I Sign Out". I was not signed in. I clicked the Buy-It-Now button. I cancelled so the computer owner would not have to pay for my purchase. After the refund was issued, I either bought it from another seller or else didn't buy it at all.

@ten_o_nine   There's only 2 or 3 options, so they have to pick one even if none are applicable, they just choose one of them.  I have buyer's remorse is not one of the options unfortunately.

My keyboard was on the floor, and in a chaotic moment, my grandmother's cane accidentally hit a few keys while she was rushing to the bathroom.

I've ordered by mistake before, and although I may be a little quirky, I have none of those conditions mentioned above. Also I'm not trying to stiff a seller.

I just ordered the wrong item.

Hi - No one is saying that about you, but ordering wrong item is not the same as "Ordered by Mistake" especially when there are variations available. and ordering the correct one at the same time if available.

I didn't take it personally, but using myself as a normal person (a merchant, even) who has made this kind of mistake (yes, ordered by mistake), I think some conclusions drawn here are a little wild.

One example - I could not find a particular book I needed for my research job . We had just had a library clean-out and after looking everywhere I gave up, figuring it had accidentally gotten into the donate box. I ordered the book. Very shortly thereafter, like within about 10 minutes, I found it in a pile in my library. My mistake - fortunately, the seller was nice about it.

A guy ordered a remote from me and then found his and asked to cancel saying it was a mistake. No problem - I cancelled (he gave me a ridiculous neutral afterwards that was actually pretty funny).

Precisely, in both of these cited examples, items certainly were not ordered by mistake. They were purposely ordered & at some point within the process that need or purpose was abated. Lost items were found. The orders were not mistakes. They were properly ordered & then deemed unneeded shortly after the order.

"Ordered by mistake" was/is a gracious "out" of the transaction.

"Changed my mind" is a much more appropriate option.

It permits the buyer to change their mind with a minimum of embarrassment.

That is fine with me.

But that is what it is.

My perhaps poor attempt at humor was not designed to stigmatize anyone out there who might be suffering from sincere issues.  Just a dramatic flourish to make the point.

Not arguing semantics.  I'm glad customers have the freedom to make the request.

I simply have a rather large logic dilemma with the wording of that particular selection.

Change it to "changed my mind" and we are fine.

I had one ordered by mistake a few days ago, he sent me a message to tell me he wanted a nickel coin book and ordered a dime one in error (I didn't have the one he wanted so he just cancelled).

The other cancellation I got this week was because she found one at a better price and wanted to either cancel, or I could match the price. She was a repeat buyer so I matched the price (which wasn't a significant discount, but enough of a discount she wanted to cancel and buy from the other seller).

Re: Cancellation reason "Order placed by mistake"

I had 2 similar episodes. The first was a buyer who for what ever reason (probably one of the reasons listed above and more: 1.  addicted to clicking, 2. brainless shopping) and  cancelled the order, not once but twice- I blocked the buyer.  The second was around Christmas time with a Christmas plaid Jacket. I purchased the label and mailed it out to get it out to the buyer for Christmas ASAP.  Luckily eBay caught it before I did, saw it was marked shipped and received by the post office. eBay did not cancel the order and I did get paid.

I ordered it and my wife shouted at me, "why did you buy that - you could have bought it on Amazon for half the price."
