Can you stop buyers from purchasing item if they are brand new to ebay ?

I sell jewelry and I've had trouble with brand new customers wanting to purchase expensive jewelry.  They come back and said they never authorized credit card sale or never requested account?  Can I say no?

Why would you want to block every newbie, or guest, that comes along because you have had a few bad experiences? Take a look at my feedback, just the first two pages, and see how many say, "fast payment. Hope to deal with you again." ALL have a 0 or low f/b score. I would have A LOT less sales if I blocked newbies and I have had very few problem with them, including those that purchase jewelry.

Visit this link and you can update your buyer requirements. https://www.ebay.com/bmgt/buyerrequirements. Otherwise, as someone else suggested, cancel the sale for it being out of stock. That WILL affect your rating with eBay tho. Not your buyer.

Good luck to you.

Hello Mary, Well i was able to see it was an actual home not a warehouse or strip mall.  They lived in a very nice community as you get a bio of the area. So while there is no guarantee it did give me the confidence and peace of mind the sale would not be a problem. I actually gave them the first feedback they received.

You're correct. However, just want to point out that a shopping mall CAN refuse you service. They don't even need a reason. eBay not so much.

That said I have sold a total of 43 items so far since Sept 6 clearing out my old stuff. Two of them were to 0 feedback buyers. One had joined that same day (the 'riskiest' buyer?). No issues so far. Two sales I would have missed or at least delayed.

It's nice that in America an enterprise can protect themselves by refusing service to people. We don't seem to have that in Canada...

A friend of mine works for the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) in one of their retail outlets. People come in and steal stuff all the time. They police take so long to show up the crook is long gone. They are told to leave the store, they just don't leave, steal more stuff and head on their way. There are files on all the regular crooks with surveillance for retroactive charges if they ever get arrested. My friend has worked there for three years. The only person arrested was his coworker because he was seen walking into the store with a box cutter in his pocket and the cops tackled him to the ground. (Race played a part in this too).

I was at my post office mailing stuff today when all the high school kids came into the Shoppers Drug Mart and started stealing stuff. Apparently the police never bother to show up and they keep coming back and doing it again. they've been banned from the store, but never get arrested because cops here don't care.

When I was living in the US I locked myself out of my apartment three days after moving in and went through the window. The police were there in a huge hurry to arrest me (but didn't when I convinced them I lived there and just misplaced my keys). I wish we had that kind of response in Canada when crime happens.

I worked at a retail store in Ottawa back in the late 90s. We caught someone shoplifting and called the cops. They took off. The cops arrived 30 mins later. My manager just looked at them and said, "They got away."

And, if you did not approve of the buyer's dwelling place, or delivery location, you would have cancelled? For what reason? Out of stock?

What about if that warehouse was a freight forwarder? Or if that strip mall contained the a store and your buyer was the owner?

@soh.maryl

No i would not have canceled as i said it just gave me the peace of mind. I will always ship to whoever buys from me. I do not have high priced items like the original poster was talking about. Really for me it is pretty low risk. I do this only because i enjoy selling and connecting with other collectors not as a income source. Have a wonderful day.

Keep in mind that a freight forwarder is the second safest address you can ship to. Your responsibility as for delivery ends at the forwarder, and much of the Money Back Guarantee ends there too.

The safest is a mailbox, with postal boxes being safest and commercial (eg UPS) following. The box requires a key and the renter has to give indentification to rent the box.

Both are safer than a front porch or a house box which are unmonitored most of the time.

Frankly, it rather gives me the creeps to know that sellers Google me to see if I live at an approved address, in an approved residence.   Unlike them, I have never believed that personal honesty and integrity are manifest in real estate.

On the other hand, perhaps I should find a way to Google sellers' addresses, to be sure the item I'm buying comes from surroundings of which I approve.  I mean, if the yard looks  messy,  think how dirty the inside of the house where my item is stored might be!  If the place is on a busy street or road, there may be smuts from all the exhaust fumes!  If it's very rural, how do I know there won't be a lingering barnyard smell on my item?  And is that a tricycle I see?  Ugh!  Sticky-fingered children may have touched my item!   Doghouse in the yard?  Oh, no, there might be a pet hair on my item!

Re: Can you stop buyers from purchasing item if they are brand new to ebay ?

I'm here to make money, as such I don't care if a buyer's account is 2 seconds old or 20 years old. They pay, I ship or if it's a local pickup transaction I contact them through eBay to work out the details. In the 8 years I've been selling on eBay I've never once felt the need to "google" one of my buyers or their address.

Love the response. Always nice to see the other side of the mirror. Well done.

No where in my post did i say i would not ship to any address. These are a manifestation of your thoughts putting words in peoples posts that were never there.You were the one to say if i did not like the look of the house i would not ship.To look at where i was shipping a package to give me peace of mind you have turned into me discriminating against a buyer for where they live. richard  as for how long you have sold here 8 years and never looked up an address for any reason i am glad that works for you.

@4pawsup

Not sure why your post was directed to me. I made NO comment about not shipping based on an address. And by the way I have been here 19 years, not 8.

And it is not for me to defend maxine*j but apparently you did not realize that her comment was meant to be hyperbolic sarcasm.
