Can buyer return item if they opened the item?

Minor cosmetic damage to item. Buyer opened the shrink-wrap and now want to return the item for one that is in pristine condition. As a TRS with 30 day free returns, would this instance be covered under the return policy if they opened the item?

Tell him to return for refund.

Not for a replacement which will cost you more to reship.

And I believe he should be paying for the tracked return shipping, since the item is no longer in the condition in which it was sent.

I'm thinking here that the item is still saleable, at a lower price, that it could be with minor cosmetic box damage but shrinkwrapped.

How much is TRS actually worth to you? How many Defects if any do you have?

Frankly, I don't think most buyers see the TRS badge (Mine are Global TRS and do not show on dotCOM, but do in the rest of the world) and don't ever really understand how feedback works.

How much does your business depend on that 10% discount on fees and the quarterly allowance for shipping supplies?

If the buyer found cosmetic damage after taking off the shrink wrap then that qualifies as a not as described claim under the money back guarantee. How would the buyer have known there was damage without opening it?

If the buyer caused the cosmetic damage because they opened it then that's a different story, however there is still nothing stopping that buyer from opening a money back guarantee claim.

Can you provide a few more details about the item and the damage?

It's a vinyl record, so they definitely would have seen the damage to one of the corners before removing the shrink-wrap.

In that case, you will be able to deduct a percentage of the refund because of your free return policy and the item being sent back in an altered condition sans-shrink wrap which affects the resale value.
