I sold something and sent it. Now the buyer claims to have never received it and gave me an address halfway around the country. I'm checking the order details of this item and the Paypal details -- they both show the address he gave me.
I did not keep an invoice printout and sent it by postoffice so I only have delivery confirmation. HOWEVER, the bidding history shows his zipcode not as the one he claims now, but as the one I sent it to.
I don't believe I sent it to a random address. Is there any way to find out if a buyer recently changed their address?

It doesn’t matter if they recently changed their address as they are responsible for making sure that when they pay, the correct address is showing. If you have delivery confirmation showing that is was delivered to the zip on the payment address then you would win an eBay or PP case.
edit...I just read your post again. Do you mean that the order details show you the address that you sent it to or the address that you didn’t send it to?

Did you print the shipping label before or after he paid?

Did someone claiming to be the buyer give you another address,
so you mailed it at the post office to that random address?

That's what I was going to ask. @leo_wle_xjoknmok , buyers can't change the shipping address after payment, but they can change it at the time of payment. If you shipped to an address that appeared before they paid and before the order was finalized then you could have sent it to the wrong address and will be responsible for refunding them.

Check the order details.
That address that is on that orders details page, so long that is where you sent it to you're safe.
If so I would copy and paste that address and send it to the buyer with a short message stating that was the address of record at time of payment and that is where it was sent to.
Then I would stay silent, the only other thing to concern oneself with is if the buyer opens an Item Not Received case, which if that happens you'll need to enter the tracking number into the case.

Specifically, to answer the actual question I believe the address sticks on payment.
So the buyer can change it until they pay, once the buyer pays that is the address of record ebay will provide IF you print the label through ebay. Should the buyer change the address after payment it will NOT affect the order details, however I do believe the buyer can change it before paying (like in the case of an auction or a BIN that doesn't require immediate payment) and that would change the details however the order isn't complete until it has been paid.
Hope that answers it.

If PayPal details show the shipping address as the one “half way around the country”, then that was the address on file when he made the payment to you. That details page is static in regards to shipping address and doesn’t change regardless if the buyer changed his address afterwards or not.
If you didn’t ship to that address originally, it’s your mistake. How that mistake was made is a different story that might need further investigation and research. But as for this buyer... it sounds like he’s legit to me.

Plain and simple answer.
If you printed out the shipping label via ebay and you didn't change anything, you're safe.
If it was sent to the wrong address, that's not your fault. It's the buyers fault for not updating the address.
