Can I change an existing non-variation listing to one with variations?

I have sold 150 items over a couple of years and really want to keep that statistic so that people know that it's a good item, but now I want to add a couple variations (other parts that fit with this item) and I'm afraid I can't... 

Is there any way for me to have a multi-variation listing but keep the "56 Available  167 Sold" from the existing listing?

Here I am about to contadict one of the smartest people on the boards, but I'm pretty sure I've done it before. I actually have a listing that i wanted to change from non-variation to variation. I'll mess with it over the weekend and come back with my findings (even if I'm wrong).

Sorry @inhawaii - it's never been possible to change a non-variation listing to a variation listing, or vice versa.

There are times I've created variation listings with a single variation, expecting that I might get additional variations down the line. Perhaps that's what you did and what you're thinking of.
