Re: CONGRESSMEN BLAST POSTAGE SUBSIDIES FOR FOREIGN SHIPPERS

Hopefully the rest of the lawmakers will jump on board an put an end to this. Our own country subsidizing our competition, competition that shouldn't be on this site in the first place, at our expense is an atrocity that borders on treason. We should all write a letter to this Congressman to show our support.

Canada gets it:

Canada Post phasing out controversial shipping discount for Chinese goods

Re: CONGRESSMEN BLAST POSTAGE SUBSIDIES FOR FOREIGN SHIPPERS

The problem is that USPS chose this fraudulent way to bail themselves out of overspending and keeping their voter bloc of below-average performers happy.

And they can buy a lot of lawmakers. And threaten them with loss of postal union votes.

Unless the public and small business people start screaming about this and calling their lawmakers and demanding this end, the USPS will get away with it.

You are way off base. The sole reason for financial difficulties in USPS is that Congress forced it to pay forward pension benefits -- benefits that, in many cases, will not be due for decades. Look it up in your favorite search engine. Until this forced change, USPS always SHOWED A PROFIT!

And isn't that pension mandate supposed to expire soon since they are nearing their goal?

Heres another one:

How about we stop exporting raw logs to china?  Make them buy the finished product so we can keep American lumber mill jobs.

And when you wonder why lumber prices are so sky high here in the US.  Maybe because the chinese pay more$ for the raw logs....that has cost a huge loss in lumber mills jobs in the Northwest.

Some direct quotes from an article by Roy Keene on this issue:

"Drive the Columbia River from Longview into Portland, and you can see big log ships lined up. At least 500 timber jobs leave the Northwest weekly as boatload after boatload of raw logs are exported to Asian mills...."

"Today's political ploys to increase logging on public lands are little different than what they've always been -- well rewarded resource plundering. The reality is that global timber corporations are being allowed to exploit the Northwest like a Third World resource center. To honestly restore our jobs and forests, this inequity needs to be resolved by stopping the largest loss first -- the unrestricted export of raw logs..."

Just another issue to think about that causes housing prices to skyrocket, because lumber is so expensive...

And here I thought it was the far left working hard to kill logging and forestry over the past few years.  I think that is what killed the biggest contributor to my county's economy over the years (and was likely a contributor to this year's worst fire season ever).  We used to have not one, but 2 sawmills here in town.  Heck, from where I live, I can even see the remains of Ellingson's over on the other side of the tracks.  Back when I was growing up here, that was what kept the majority of the population off welfare even.

Re: CONGRESSMEN BLAST POSTAGE SUBSIDIES FOR FOREIGN SHIPPERS

Well don't hold your breath waiting for the US Congress to do anything that would be of any real benefit to the American people. There is no congressman or senator out of the 535 that will do anything unless it has a positive effect on their own personal bottom lines. They don't listen to common folk the same way they listen to billionaires. Funny how that seems to work.

If you ever wonder what our elected officials think of us, just look at that stuff they passed at 1:30 Am Saturday. Don't expect it to change anytime soon, we keep re-electing them for some reason.

Re: CONGRESSMEN BLAST POSTAGE SUBSIDIES FOR FOREIGN SHIPPERS

Term limits for members of congress would help, but that will never happen. Many of these puppets have have enjoyed their positions for nearly 40 years now, and as long as they please the powers that be, they will be there for life. It really doesn't matter who you vote for in a system that has been rigged for so long.

FDR once said: "Presidents are selected - not elected." He said that eighty something years ago, and he should have known. After all, he was selected more times than any other president, and passed away while still in office.

And more than 100 years ago Mark Twain said: "If voting really made a difference, THEY probably wouldn't let us do it."

Re: CONGRESSMEN BLAST POSTAGE SUBSIDIES FOR FOREIGN SHIPPERS

People who think this country is a Democracy, or even a republic are in for a rude awakening. It is an oligarchy. About 2 dozen families run it. Those we think we elect, work for Verizon, Wal Mart, GM, Google, Lockheed Martin etc. The News Media is downright scary and they ration what people see and think because they are too stupid to look elsewhere. As long as they have a new truck every few years and the latest i-phone, you can do what you want to them and they won't notice.  I have been in this country for a couple of decades, and have yet to figure out how this election process works, or if it is even real. It is bizarre to say the least.

You are spot on. I am always happy when i find others who don't have their heads buried in the sand, and are aware and informed. The trouble is, there is not much we can do about it. It is what it is. Have a great evening, and my best to you and yours.

Emperors in ancient Rome figured out how to keep the peasant rabble quiet...bread and circuses. Still works today.

No, that is far from the sole reason.

Anyhow, it's about time these people figured this out and did something about it.

The reason USPS does this, and does other silly things like deliver a lot of bulk rate junk mail at a loss, is to preserve their empire.  Without all the Chinese mail, and the ads, USPS would need about half the facilities and employees they currently have, and they don't want to cut anything.  And delivering that mail at a loss means the other USPS users have to pay more (subsidize it).
