Buyers not sending payment.

Hello,

I'm curious. I have an item that I listed as an auction. Everything was great no problems, until it came time to pay. I waited,I think 12 days after the winning bid and ended cancelling the sell. I relisted the item, again the auction went off without a hitch. Before I relidted I added in my description, "Remit payment within 3 days of winning bid. Well, tomorrow's the third day. This will be twice and item sold but no money. Is this normal? Am I just still feeling the non-sell/sell from the first one? I've been on Ebay since 2011, I have sold things in the past but I never remember having to relist, especiallt twice, an item for non-payment. I haven't sold in many years, things seem to have changed a bit, to be expected. Thanks for any insight.

Yes, non-payers are common with auction and Best Offer listings. List instead as fixed price with Immediate Payment Required. That solves the problem. Also keep in mind that eBay allows four full days for a buyer to remit, so your three day terms are not enforceable.

To help combat non-payers, set your Buyer Requirements to their strictest settings, to block serial non-payers from bidding on or buying your items. Be sure to also place the non-buyers on your buyer block list.

Last but not least, cancel non-payers after five days using the “buyer did not pay” reason. This gives deadbeat buyers a non-payment strike against their account by eBay. That is how non-payers are identified for the Buyer Requirement blocks. Savvy sellers use this tool from eBay to help everyone who sets up their BR.

There is no "normal" when you have 20 millions sellers and 20 million different experiences.

Some sellers have an issue with nonpayment, and others don't.

eBay cannot force a buyer to pay, so I suspect that the sellers who do have an issue with nonpayment eventually switch to fixed price listings where they can require payment upon purchase.

You've listed it at auction twice and the ending prices were practically the same. This should give a very clear indication of what you could probably sell it for at fixed price.

For auctions?

It's normal.

Buyers don't like auctions which make them wait seven days to learn they lost to a last second sniper.

Or while waiting to win, they see something identical listed as Fixed Price, buy that, and it's in the mail the next day.

EBay's "brand" is auctions, so they default new and returning sellers into that format, but 85% of transactions are actually Fixed Price.

Many sellers add to Fixed Price "Immediate Payment Required" which leaves the listing visible and available for up to 30 days or until someone actually pays for it.

EBay does  now allow you  to opt for Automatic Cancellations if transactions are not paid after four days.

The deadbeat gets a Strike which makes it harder to bid on eBay in future.

You can also set up an automatic Block on bidders with Strikes in your Seller Preferences/Buyer Requirements.

Since you have "sold" your item twice, you now have a good idea of the going market price.

So move it to Fixed Price, add IPR, and sell it.

You can also if you want to add a bit of Auction Action allow Best Offers, while setting parameters for too low offers, which will be declined with an automatic polite message, and acceptable offers which will be immediately accepted.  The two prices can be a penny apart if you like.

Should we assume that you already have set up Managed Payments so that eBay can transfer money to your bank account?

And that you are aware, as a returning/occasional seller , your buyer's cleared payment will be Held until eBay is satisfied that the item has been delivered?

The item sold for around the same price both times.

I'd forget auctions and list as a fixed price with immediate payment required.

Want to wish everyone a Safe and Happy Independence Day.

Others have already commented about the timeline and canceling for non-payment. There is no one right answer on whether to use auctions or fixed price to list something both have their pro's and con's. A lot of it depends on what you are selling.  However in this  case as reallynicestamps mentioned you have auctioned this item twice and the selling price has been pretty close to the same after receiving multiple bids on the item both time so you have a general idea of what would be a good price for a FP listing.

I use auctions for almost all of my listings and have few problems with non-payments and when I do I just roll with the flow, cancel after 5 days, generally add the person to my BBL and relist the item.  I have not used OBO for a long time simply because I don't have the time to deal with all the back and forth haggling.

Already have payment perimeters with Ebay. When I first joined Ebay in 2011, I started a Paypal account at the same time just for that purpose and have maintained the same Paypal account. So all that is way taken care of. Thank you for all the terrific advise. I have already started the process of starting another item and this time, because it's the same type of item, I have a better understanding of how to proceed forward, thanks to everyone on here. Outstanding community!

Hi again. @johng09081966 Just to clarify, you are aware, then, that all sellers are now required to be in Managed Payments? PayPal is no longer the payment processor for eBay. Buyers can still use it to pay, but eBay now sends all payments through Ayden to our bank accounts. Just want to make sure that is what you meant when you said that you have the payments covered.
