I sold a gorgeous dress that retailed for $1,000 that was worn one time. The dress is open in the back and is closed by ribbon (see picture). It has a very wide tulle skirt with lots of layers of tulle. Because of the dress being tied in the back, the dress fits sizes 2-12 and you adjust the back accordingly. A girl who is a size 10-12 tried on the dress and it fit beautifully.
Buyer wants to return the dress but among the things she wrote in her messages is the following:
This dress is so defective that I cannot even donate it to a local thrift store. (seriously...? This dress is not defective - as i said there are lots of layers of tulle but there are a few tears in the tulle that I noted in the listing. It's hardly even noticetable because there are so many layers of tulle)
As well, the sizing you gave for this dress is totally inacurate. I am a size 8 or 10. I am half naked in this dress. No way I can go out in public. (Too funny... no, she should not to out in public naked ...)
the little zipper could not be done up. It remains spread apart, showing the top of my blue bikini underwear. This is because the dress is simply way too small -- no way it will fit size 8/10/12. Could I truly wear this in public, with my underwear showing? (maybe she should wear white underwear and save her blue bikini underwear for another day... (more eye rolls)) And should I say that yes, she can truly wear this in public with her underwear showing?
I know I'm being somewhat snarky which is not me at all but I really am rolling my eyes at what she wrote.
My questions - I assume I need to just accept the return? Because the dress has a lot of tulle and is a very expensive dress, I took a lot of time to pack it up, with lots of tissue papers, large box, etc. So I added cost to the shipping to cover that.
What do I do? Just accept it? Will Ebay take out my money the same cost for return shipping? The shipping did not cost as much as listed because I added extra to cover the time packing it.
Thank you.

The dress is lovely, but the pictures you show are on the size 2 daughter?
I have to agree with the buyer here. That dress is highly unlikely to properly fit anyone larger than a size 4 (but just possibly a 6 depending on body shape).
A standard bust size 2 is about 33". The standard bust on a size 12 dress is 38". That's 5" more back exposure just at the top where it looks like 4" are already exposed on your model. The bust looks structured as well which would cause a non-flat chested size 12 woman to not have proper coverage.
And then the waist/hips are going to be 6"-7" different too.
Sure they may be able to squeeze in it, but that doesn't mean it lays/fits right
Sorry to say but I feel you missed the mark describing the fit.

I wear a Size 6/8 Dress ... mostly ... depending on the cut of the torso.
I am wide at the shoulders and chest (ribcage wise) with a small cup size .... but, I have "boy hips" LOL
I buy tankini separates bathing suits ... small bottoms / medium tops
My wedding dress was a lace-up back with stiff bust like the OP's dress ... size 6, off of the rack, that fit me perfectly ... because the lace back gave me the extra width in the torso.
I would NOT expect a Size 8/10 woman to be able to wear my dress, no matter how much lace they let out (and most definitely not a 12). I would also not expect it to fit a Size 2/4, because the back panels would have to overlap and the waist would be too loose.
Exact Measurements are always important ...

Speaking as a guy with zero fashion sense, I still think it's highly unlikely that a single dress could fit such a wide range of sizes just because it's secured with a tie in the back, unless it's constructed of burlap and has "FAMOUS POTATOES" printed across the front.
I could see three or four proportional examples of the same design that collectively could cover sizes 2-12 (e.g. the smallest cut would fit 2-4; the next larger would fit 6-8, then 10-12 for the largest cut; you would pick the one that includes your size), but I can't see just one example that would realistically fit sizes at either end of a range that wide. All the physical pieces that collectively make up the dress can't stay the same size in a 2 as they would be in a 12.

The only dress that might fit a range of 2 to 12 is a Sari.
Spandex might get by ... but it shouldn't 😄
