Buyer sent me this today:
"I've had these shoes on for less than a hour and there already creases. I paid a 120 for a pair of shoes I will never put on my feet again. There trash. Not worth over a $100.".
I politely replied that I'm not in control of the quality of the product (it was a Nike shoe) and that I will forward their feedback to Nike. Now, they've replied with this: "They should of cost me 90. I want a 30 refunded or I need to send them back to get a full refund. I should anyway. There trash. My feefback will be left according to my experience."
What should I do?

Goodness gracious that is one of the best suggestions for improvements that I have heard in years.

Let’s hope they do not go on to someone else and dupe them.

Not to mention the gazillion dollars lost in FVF from these people when the partial refunds are awarded.

Well, hopefully not, it's not uncommon in these bully scenarios that the bully, finding that the mark will not go along with them, moves on to find an easier mark.

Someone might have already said something like this but here's my 2 cents anyway.
If it were me, I would refund them the $30 and limit the amount of words I exchange with them. Cut your losses and consider yourself lucky that you're only out $30. Is letting them win right or fair? No but is $30 worth the negative feedback?
In my opinion, you are dealing with a dangerous person who is currently committing a very serious violation of the law. I'm not sure what the correct criminal charge or wording is but the offense feels like something along the lines of intimidation, harassment, bullying, or maybe this is blackmail, I'm not exactly sure. You're basically dealing with a psychopath so trying to use reason or expecting to arrive at a fair resolution somehow, I don't think is even possible.
I think the best you can do is give them the $30 and then file a serious complaint with Ebay because this person is a criminal who needs to be banned. They've done this before and they will do it again, I just hope Ebay is able to recognize the serious nature of situations like this and then do something about it.

Feedback really has little affect on a seller so to me $30 absolutely would be worth keeping let them leave a neg and it's not actually the money that would be my main reason it's not giving into scammers.

Your solution allows the "buyer" to keep the shoes and continue scamming other sellers, nerds people like us, people reading this. This is not ok. Return for refund is the only answer.
They started out saying the shoes they paid $120 for were only worth $100, then immediately asked for $30, then $40 with the drop shipping ploy. This is typical scammer stuff, moving the goalpost. They could ask for more after being paid off, as dhbookds said upthread.

Fwiw, just how hard would it be for eBay's Trust & Safety team to track buyers that somehow manage to have partial refunds on almost their purchases? If they are really interested in cleaning up the site and protecting sellers that's the first place they ought to look for abusive buyers / scammers.
I believe ebay can already track this easily. They already know who their problematic buyers are that are regular buyers. But you know, a little off the top if they keep coming back is ok by ebay.
