Buyer's Request to Ship to Address Not on File

Monday morning round table...On Friday 03/28 late afternoon, I sold an item, I wanted to get it to the P.O. before they closed, I printed the Label, dropped off Pkg, obtaining receipt.  Shortly after returning rec'd message from buyer "please send Pkg. to .....I've moved".  My response was "your Pkg. is enroute w/Tracking......to address on file w/eBay (I cut & pasted USPS timeline information for him) as well as advised him eBay also provides shipping Tracking info.

Do buyer's not read disclosures in listings ie; "If you have re-located, please confirm address is correct, we do not ship to alternate addresses" (this is in all my listings) should be delivered tomorrow.

So, will see how this shapes up. Ahhh Mondays 🤔

With the latest changes at eBay it seems to be that sellers can do some changes/editing on eBay labels, but eBay has frozen the ZIP code space making it so that it can no longer be changed.

That's only because the ZIP is derived from the address validation that occurs behind the scenes when the seller purchases the label. It doesn't matter what the ZIP code is going in, because it will be replaced (and expanded to ZIP+4) by the correct ZIP found for the address in the USPS database.

If the seller (for whatever reason) does revise the address prior to purchasing the label, the ZIP will be updated to whatever value is correct for the new address.

Technically, Delivery Confirmation only reports the City and 5-digit ZIP of delivery, so you could conceivably change the street address to someplace else within the same City and ZIP without losing Item Not Received protection, but it's not something I would do. (Scammers have been seen to do that for both sale and return scams.)

May not be "fact" for all, but just now I "tested" my posted info. I can change the buyer name, street address, city, state, but it does not change, nor am I allowed to change the "zip code" from that provided by the buyer payment. YMMV

eIS is even more restrictive. YMMV

ETA shot showing that the zip block cannot be edited. YMMV

( I entered/removed a proper address before taking the shot)

Right; the updated ZIP will appear once you have purchased the label. When you buy the label, the Ship-To: address is parsed and validated against the USPS database. Any minor changes are done automatically (e.g. changing "Suite" to "Apt"), and a 5-digit ZIP will be expanded to its full ZIP+4 value for the given street address.

Re: Buyer's Request to Ship to Address Not on File

While this is an option available to sellers.  It will VOID seller protection if you change the ship to address, even within the same zip code.

Sometimes a buyer's address is too long to fit in the first address line [happens a lot with Puerto Rico], you can split up the address between the 2 lines offered for the street address and that will NOT affect your Seller Protection as long as you don't change the address at all, just split it between the two lines available.

Hey eBay wrote the title not me.  What you stated is clearly written in smallest font type by eBay.  Just an eBay messenger using the Help and Contact search ling.

Maybe you can send a message to  the appropriate chain of command on the  west coast and get eBay to fix it the title    that the search bar brought me to.  Wasn't long ago that one (as a buyer) could cancel with in just a few minutes after paying - I did it in late 2024 when I ordered an engine filter for a  riding law mower.  See details

The item has been canceled.

Re: Buyer's Request to Ship to Address Not on File

I'm unclear on what it is you'd like me to do exactly.

If you purchased something that you decide you don't want for whatever reason you may have, simply message the seller and ask for a cancellation.  The sooner you do that the more likely the cancellation will be an option for the seller.

OK, thanks for that clarification. I did not want to actually change, but was checking as there have been recent threads where the OP's have stated that they could not change the zip when changing a "ship to".

Apparently, I have not been back to those threads to read that "purchasing the label" would resolve the "zip lock" issue. It's in the bag (ziplocked) now. Not sure who is going to purchase a label that they cannot enter a zip for. (I don't change shipping addys) 🤣

Re: Buyer's Request to Ship to Address Not on File

Not asking you to do anything about the  order I canceled back in Dec. 2024 - that is in the history books..  Just gave you and example of what  I personally  just 4 months ago. I cancelled it with in the time frame  eBay allotted.

Seems eBay changed the  rules.  In my opinion this headline is a bit misleading.  Thought you , knowledable person of the Ins & Outs of life with eBay.   might be interest  in suggesting he San Jose folks to modtify  the  headline just a tad.  Personally have no vested interest in eBay so much - don't  sell on eBay and buy  just of few things

"How buyers can possibly cancel an order

  • be able to through acquired knowledge or skill.
  • be permitted to.

Yes, I saw those too. Had they plowed ahead with changing the address and buying a label anyhow, the ZIP would have been automatically updated to whatever the new address required, but of course we were all saying to not do that... 😁

I understand your point.  Still I would encourage people to actually read the paragraph beyond a title and not assume the title should be all inclusive of how a rule works.  I would recommend that in anything in life that has a set of rules or policies.

Agreed. Generally, I'm one who hopes for the best but expects the worst. For that reason, I always read the fine print.

It is NOT the small or "fine print".  It is getting beyond the BOLD oversized titles of a section to actually read what the policy is.  It is all in normal size print.  Some just chose to go by the bold titles or partial sentences instead of reading the policy to try and better understand that specific rule.
