I recently sold a very large item that I listed as Local Pick Up Only. The buyer made an offer and I accepted it. I clarified that it was pick up only since his address was in MD when I'm in NJ. As soon as he paid he tried asking me to ship it to him instead. I declined and told him again he had to pick it up.
He paid via PayPal, I gave my address for pickup, and he then asked fof my phone number. I figured it would be for future clarification when he was on his way to pick it up or in case he got lost or something like that. I gave him my number and as soon as I did my phone blew up with 40 messages from people with similar numbers. For example if my last 4 digits we're '4566' all the numbers ended in '4567, 4568, 4569, ect'
I called the eBay hotline to ask what they could do and they said his profile is legitimate and his feedback is solid so they'd investigate further.
Should i cancel the transaction?? I'm kinda afraid this is some identify thief scam to get people's address and phone numbers

Refund his PayPal payment and tell him to pay with cash when he picks it up.

Once a buyer & seller are in a transaction either party can get the the contact information - e-mail, phone number & address from the other party thru eBay - some of that info is also readily available w/o contacting eBay e.g. a seller can simply go to the sales record and click on the View Record drop down and find a buyer's tele. #, etc. When one request info thru eBay teh other party receive teh same info for the requesting party.

The buyer would have a difficult time claiming snad when he inspected the item before pick up, what he CAN do, if he paid by cc at PP, is file a chargeback with unauthorized use of his cc,since there is no tracking number to prove delivery...which saves sellers from fake chargeback claims with cc's at PP..

I would have to wade through the T&Cs to be sure, but at least some of the buyer protection clauses are voided for items that are picked up in person, which would be items that are listed for Local Pickup Only, even though eBay requires that such listings offer at least one means of electronic payment in addition to cash on pickup.

Ebay requires an online payment in addition to cash on pickup when listing a local pickup only item. Many people are afraid of carrying cash and think they are doing the seller a favor by using PayPal. Then when they pick up the item there is no way to show it picked up. If you mark it as shipped ebay wants a tracking number which is impossible so seller is dinged.
On the phone number front, that is becoming very tricky as FB and even PP want to streamline access by simply using your phone number. I have not given my number to either and keep clicking the No Thanks link. Your identity can be stolen by giving out your phone number. I recently retired and seriously considering cutting the cord on all this tech stuff as it was fun for awhile but now getting dangerous.

Cash ONLY when it's a local pickup...
YOU CAN'T LIST LOCAL PICKUP WITH CASH ONLY OPTION. Buyer typically cannot make a claim on a item listed with local pickup as the buyer is able to inspect it in person. Just do not mark it shipped. I sold chairs in November and the buyer used PayPal and I still show the item awaiting shipment in Seller Hub. FB exchanged.

Why would you do that?
There is zero need for either party to need phone numberI
I must disagree with that . Every item I've sold as a local pick up the buyer has been given our address and phone number . Obviously they need the address unless another location to meet is chosen . That's where phone numbers come in handy . You need to able to keep in touch in case there might be a reason the buyer is late or can't find your address or the location. I've never had any problems doing this. Tulips

Only use ebay messages. If something goes south that's the only thing ebay will ever look at.

The seller could claim they were never paid too for that matter . I've always been paid through Pay Pal for local pick ups and never had a problem . I just think somewhere along the line trust needs to come into play . Tulips

So if I'm sitting in the Walmart parking lot, waiting for you to come pick up something and you are running late, how in the heck are you going to let me know? How long would I sit there waiting for you? What if you got in a wreck and you aren't going to make it at all? Here I sit ... waiting on you ... because I don't have a way to contact you. Humm ... how's that gonna work out for you?

BUT, The buyer can file SNAD, after having picked up the item. go bad chicken
I think it would be difficult for a buyer to convince e bay of a SNAD since they had the chance to inspect it, try it on or plug it in upon pick up . Tulips

Agreed . Sometimes people have trouble finding our address since it's a bit confusing . I always tell buyers to bring their cell phones in case they have problems . Just sitting in a parking lot waiting for hours on a buyer who can not contact you could prove more risky than if you would have just exchanged phone numbers as well . Tulips

"There is zero need for either party to need phone numbers."
1. You are Wrong
2. I have had the need to call or receive call from two buyers & a seller 3 since 2008. One time the other party (a seller) DID NOT RESPOND to my eBay messages and a reply was needed to finalize the outcome of a transaction and the other two times to communicate changes in original ETA times for a customer pick-up > customer running late because their dog drank the last beer or other popcorn like reason
3. Agree communication should be with eBay message
4. after reading your replies to your neutral/neg FB i might understand why you would want to talk to a buyer

You can't list local pick up listings without including an on line payment method.

@Anonymous
So sorry to bother you all but didn’t you tell us buyers can file NAD on local pickup?
Also can you tell everyone here that we cannot demand cash on pickup? We can accept cash but cannot demand it as far as I know. Thank you all & have a great day! 😀😀❤️😎
