“Buyer” requesting cancellation when they haven’t actually bought

Hi, any clarity here welcome.

This morning I received 4 messages from an eBay user asking that I cancel their order but they hadn’t actually bought anything from me. I explained clearly they had no order with me to be cancelled. Another message - can you cancel it now… No, because there is still no purchase… But it says pending on this end… But I have not had a notification advising of a purchase. 10 minutes later, they buy the shoes and instantly put in a cancellation request.

Is there some sort of scam going on I’m not aware of as now eBay won’t let me resist the shoes? All very confusing.

TIA

Alison

No problem here.  Just cancel and block.  Your reason for cancelling will be "buyer requested".

Sounds to me like he had items in his cart and did not know how to remove them.  I get requests for invoices all the time for stuff in someone's cart.  They think that you can see everything and can do stuff for them that you just cannot.

Just my two cents.

OR there was some serious lag between the buyer paying and ebay's recognition of the payment and they canceled before ebay pushed through the "paid' notification (and changed the status of the shoes to sold).

I had a purchase this morning through ebay via paypal and it told me there was an error and to check my email for status, yet the PP email clearly said I'd paid and it wasn't showing as a purchase on ebay until a few minutes later.

I've experienced delays up to 30 min from when a buyer said they made a purchase to when that order actually showed up on my Orders page. 30 min is uncommon, but it's happened a few times.

10-15 min lag on the other hand is very common.

OP really should have blocked the member id after receiving those messages in the first place. This "buyer" should have never had the opportunity to make that purchase.

After all said/done it was an Obvious Lag in the system (customer bought- just hadn't registered at your end yet).

You should NOT be getting any emails from paypal unless you gave buyer your email address.  To the poster, I think that your buyer put the items in the cart and has not paid. Immediately block that buyer. Immediately.  You never want a buyer that has no idea what they are doing and /or are undecisive.

Hello? I was the buyer. Paying through ebay with paypal.

Cancel the order using buyer requested.  To re-list you have a couple of options once the cancelation is complete. The easiest is to probably just find the order and use the sell similar option.

Well, it might be that you are looking in the wrong place. On the seller hub page down the left column are a variety of categories including “cancellations”. If a buyer files a cancellation request through eBay then the sale is removed from your “sold and ready to ship” list and moved into the cancellation file. That would be why you think he did not buy anything. Click that link and see if it is there.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my query. 24 hours later the same buyer started the same process on another item listed (message asking to cancel without purchase) but I thought I had blocked them on eBay’s system. I suspect they’re playing some strange game. Exact same buyer, exact same message. This time I chose not to reply - they didn’t go on the “buy” the item so there was no delay. I’m hoping that they have now actually been blocked. Many thanks
