Buyer replaces working item with defective one and requests a return

Hi everyone, can anyone please shed light on what is the best way forward when buyer purchases a working item from you and then replaces it with a defective one and then open returns request for defective item? Thanks

Here are some thoughts on that.

If your items have a model number/serial number information tag like one has on their flat screen TV, the serial number is usually unique to each one produced(if you bought 2 identical flat screens, the serial number will be different from the other) that being said when you list item add the tag as a picture so it shows the serial number(may also be on the box). That way if they pull the switch and claim defective and you get back one with a different serial number, you have all the evidence you need to state your claim with ebay under ebays return policy stating .

Buyers may be liable for loss in value of the item if it's returned in a different condition from how it was received, or if the item is not packaged securely to prevent damage in shipment. In the event that an item is returned used or damaged, some sellers might provide a partial refund to account for the loss in the item's value.

This applies when the loss in value is due to handling of the goods which was not necessary for checking the condition, properties, or mode of operation.

Buyers who have a history of abusing the returns process may be subject to the consequences

How do you know he did that or is going to do that if all he did so far was request a return?
