Buyer rcvd my item with "no returns" and admits "he made a mistake" - I want to take it back but ...

I sold an item marked "no returns."  Buyer received it and BUYER said HE GOOFED, and I told him I was willing to take it back.  He tried as I suggested to use "RETURN ITEM" from his past purchases including CHANGED MIND, BOUGHT IN ERROR and even DEFECTIVE and with all those the response to his form was "buyer doesn't take returns, sorry you are SOL" which really surprised me.

The next option I tried in order to help him was:  I started to do a  CANCEL SALE, BUYER WANTS TO CANCEL.  Now that would have worked but it was going to cost me $10 (not even including my shipping)  in fees!  All I got was $54.00 net to the bank and eBay wants $64 back from me if I proceed.

I did use their promoted sale feature which may(??) be part of the problem.  In any case, is there any way I can take this back and help the guy out without it costing me almost $15 inc my shipping.

Buyer rcvd my item with "no returns" and admits "he made a mistake" - I want to take it back but ...

Issue resolved between the buyer and myself.

Yes, very strange indeed,  First let me say I believe the buyer is honest as he acknowledged that it was his error for ordering the wrong item.  Never made any false claims. My ad couldn't have been any clearer but he simply misread it. He is returning the item to me and making me whole by paying me the fees  and shipping I have lost in the deal.  I will cancel the sale as soon as I see the item is in the USPS system.

Not a clue as to why he couldn't start a return through the system unless as someone suggested maybe he had too many other returns but I have no idea on that.  I just did a return of a "no return" item as a test  (AND OF COURSE IMMEDIATELY CANCELED IT as an error when done) and had no issue going through the entire process.  Very weird.  Beleive it or not this is the VERY FIRST return I have had in 24+ years selling  on eBay!

Have the buyer initiate a return on his end. Reason: Ordered by mistake -or- Changed my mind

Buyer pays for return shipping.

When you receive the item back issue a refund LESS the original shipping.

Been there, done that:

As I wrote in my OP:

Don't let buyer use defective or any Item Not as Described return reason, or you will be forced to pay the return shipping.  Buyer should be able to open the changed mind return, with you then having the option to accept or reject it.

Are you sure buyer is trying to open the return on the correct item?

Has it been under 30 days?

Is the sale domestic?

That doesn't make sense since sellers are still giving the option to take a return even if the listing says no returns.  Is it past the 30 days since purchase?

You mentioned that you would lose the fees if you cancel which would happen if you did a partial refund.  You could refund the buyer but hold back the shipping cost and fees.

I don't  believe him. eBay would not say you are SOL.

That's  something I might tell him if he came here and said he wanted to return an item he no longer wants and the seller  doesn't take returns and won't take it back.

If it's  within 30 days I'm pretty sure he can request Return this item and it's  your choice to accept or decline.

@pjcdn2005  @rfmtm It's been 2 days.  USA Purchase.  I agree with you 100%.  I even tried to start a return on something **I** purchased that was no returns and I was able to do it.  He tried multiple times on multiple devices with multiple browsers.  He sent me screen prints of all attempts.

If I cancel eBay automatically takes the refund from my bank account (see screen print)  so I have no option for a partial return.  Buyer even sent me screen prints of his attempt to request return and they all got denied because seller (me) says no returns!

Well you definitely want the buyer to open a changed mind return, so you can get your fees back, and buyer pays for the return shipping.

Something just not right here.  Is the buyer on the mobile App?

@rfmtm

Buyer claims "He tried multiple times on multiple devices with multiple browsers."  He sent me a screen print of it failing.

Did you buy your label on eBay? Your final value fees should be around $10 so that 20.91 must include shipping. Or is there something else that I'm missing?

In the top screenshot ebay shows that their portion of the refund is 10.28 which are the fees so you aren't having to pay the fees if you cancel.  But if that other portion is shipping than yes, you would have to pay for that.

If you go to all orders in sellers hub, the dropdown will show you the send refund option.  That is where I should have said that you would do a partial refund through.  You fill in the amount and the reason for the refund there.  As I mentioned, your fees wouldn't be returned with a partial.

Has the buyer already arranged to send the item back ? I wouldn't refund until you receive the item back.

I still don't understand why the buyer can't open a return. I wonder if when  ebay cuts them off from the using the mbg because of too many returns if they also stop them from doing any return??

That's so weird.  I wish it were true for the site, but I doubt they just implemented it LOL.  They can even ask past 30 days, though you can decline.

Here's how I would get around it.   Just refund him.  He doesn't have to go through the returns system.  You can just issue a refund.  I did this recently.  The only downside is you don't get the fees back, so something to consider if your fees are substantial.   In the past, you could call Ebay & they'd return FVF fees in this case, IDK if that's still true.  Mine was not high enough to bother with.
