Buyer opens case for item not delivered nearly a week before due and then ...

New one on me: Buyer paid for item on the 13th, I mailed it on the 14th and he opened a case against me today (2/17) thinking that the item was due for delivery on Friday the 16th. However the shipping info shows it was due to be delivered on Friday the 23rd. We're talking about a $6 item including free delivery. So I write to him and point out that he had the date wrong. He writes back that he bought another one that was cheaper than mine because he thought mine wasn't coming. First of all, I'm surprised that ebay allows him to open a "not recieved" case before the due date. But what I am supposed to do now? Should I report him? Or wait for that case to close and inevitable return request that will follow? Or just refund him now and hope that he goes away?

I'm new to ebay but if you mailed on the 14th, ebays says it will be delivered the 23rd? Does ebay normally set 9-10 days as the time to mail something first-class?

That's my question too - you're in Florida - is the buyer in Alaska or Hawaii as standard delivery should not take that long.

Re: Buyer opens case for item not delivered nearly a week before due and then ...

I see a Walkman sold on your account on the 13th.

If I "see original listing", it shows me USPS First Class shipping

It shows an Estimated Delivery of 2/23 if I purchased TODAY  2/20  (The calculator on a sold listing keeps moving as if it were still active)

If your buyer purchased last Tuesday 2/13, the Estimated Delivery given to the buyer would have been 2/17 (3 Business days plus 1 handling)

So ... they didn't open a case "early".

You have 3 Business days to respond.

If the tracking shows "in transit", what does the USPS site have as an estimated delivery?

If it shows probable delivery tomorrow (2/21), then just keep an eye on it and as soon as it shows delivery, plug the tracking into the case.

If it is delayed for longer, call eBay and have them extend the case. Tell them that the item was shipped on time and that tracking shows in transit (and remind them that today is NOT a business day for USPS). They will usually give a few more days for delivery.

Re: Buyer opens case for item not delivered nearly a week before due and then ...

because he thought mine wasn't coming

It is very common for buyers to think items have been lost, are not coming or have not been shipped, marking as shipped, they ignore it dont understand it keep asking wether it was shipped.

But as a buyer you need to be pervert to open a case about a few dollars and write communications repeatedly. If you think how much you could get paid for 10 minutes or more when you work instead dealing with a request, its complete waste of time.

From my side, as a buyer, I have never experienced items not arriving. There might be some front porch theft and bad locations hotspots but most cases opened on ebay are a scam or delayed international orders, lack of patience. From the communications I do see actually they are really worried sometimes and glad when the item finally comes, close the case. Or not...

Re: Buyer opens case for item not delivered nearly a week before due and then ...

No, wasn't the walkman, was an HDMI to DVI cable. And y'all are correct the original estimated delivery date was apparently last Friday 2/16 and when it wasn't in that day's mail he ordered another cheaper and brand new cable which must have been sold for $5 or less delivery included. When I started investigating, the tracking information had changed the estimated delivery date to 2/23 which is where I got that. Apparently the package was mis-routed, at least once. After opening the INR case the buyer then wrote to me to tell me that he had ordered a new cheaper cable and didn't want mine any more. I couldn't cancel the transaction as he requested because of the open case. I called Ebay customer service and spoke to them. After discussing my options I decided to issue the refund through the link on the INR case. This closed the case. I had been offering 30 day returns, so he could return it no questions asked anyway. Sometimes it is just better to cut and run. The cable is still making a grand tour of North Carolina and if it eventually makes it to his mailbox he will likely keep it especially when he compares the quality of a $35 retail slightly used Insignia cable (Insignia 6' DVI-D to HDMI Cable - Black on BestBuy.com) to the China cheapie that he bought. And frankly, I don't care. When I asked the ebay rep if after all of this he could still leave me negative feedback she said "yes he could, but if he does just call us and we will remove it." Finally yes, I added this buyer to my blocked bidder list. And I will probably stop offering 30 day returns as well.
