I have a buyer who asked to cancel their purchase right after they purchased. I didn't get to it that day and the next day before I could take care of it I got a notification from eBay that a return had been opened. Then another e-mail saying the item had been shipped back with an obviously fake tracking number on it. All for an item I never even shipped. Can't the bots at eBay check things like this before they automatically approve returns? Sheesh

eBay bots cannot determine that an item has not been shipped because sellers are not required to use tracking numbers.

You should be happy that the buyer decided he doesn't want the item BEFORE you shipped it.

Nobody. There is no package to return so the seller won't be charged for an unused return label. The buyer will get a refund without returning anything.

I was once admonished by a buyer for sending a Pyrex bowl in an envelope which of course was then smashed to bits. They even sent a photo of it. (It would have had to been flown there overnight) WELL … I had a good laugh and wrote them back.
Dear Buyer, that can't possibly be the bowl you bought from me because that bowl is in a box, sitting right here on my kitchen table, I'm just now printing the shipping label for it. Maybe you bought the same bowl from another seller?
They apologized.

My take on it was …. they broke their bowl and saw mine up for sale, bought it and tried the old "damaged in shipping" thing.
Guess they didn't wait long enough between buying and sending me a message …. (one day!)
I have 3 day handling and very seldom do I send out next day. lol

Based upon the facts you have submitted, eBay which takes pride in being a global tech company, should be able to realize the improbability of the buyer receiving delivery of the item in a matter of hours from the time of purchase.
