Did you mean:

Buyer offering more than selling price.

I listed a pair of beats last week, I was getting a lot of offers from accounts telling me to message them at different numbers. That was all I was getting so I deleted the listing. I restarted it and my first offer is almost $100 more than the asking price. The person has no ratings, I’ve only sold one item on eBay so neither do I.

Is there any way to know if it’s a scam? Also is there a way to only accept PayPal?

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Yes, those messages are all scams. An honest buyer will purchase through the listing and will not ask for contact outside the listing.

When a seller accepts only PayPal, they automatically accept credit card payments through PayPal. The credit card logos show up on ALL listings that accept PayPal.

As a brand-new seller, it's likely that you will attract only scammers, and not honest buyers who choose sellers based on their feedback history.  Well, come to think of it, scammers choose their marks based on their (lack of) feedback history.

Re: Buyer offering more than selling price.

The $100 above asking price offer is definitely a scammer.  They hope you'll be blinded by the $$ amount.

A way to avoid being jerked around is to get rid of Best Offer and use Immediate Payment Required.

And when they do sell... only send to the address provided with the PayPal payment.

I’ve sold an item through eBay, but it says 0 sold. Is there anyway to get feedback from that purchase?

Re: Buyer offering more than selling price.

There's pretty much no reason to have zero feedback as a seller. Go out and buy a few cheap ebay items. Pay fast. You'll get buyer feedback but at least it won't show as a zero.

Good luck!

Re: Buyer offering more than selling price.

New sellers with tech and electronics are the most scammed. If you are selling an expensive item, you can be a target. They prey on new sellers because they count on you not knowing the platform well enough to protect yourself. So if it doesn't seem right in some way, come here for advice.

Never give a prospective buyer your PayPal email address or your phone number. It's a policy violation to ask, send or receive contact information before a sale. Legit buyers do not need them to complete the transaction because they can buy right thru the listing and contact you thru eBay Messages.

Offering more than the amount of the item is a well-known scam. Buying, then attempting to get you to send to an alternate address is another. And trying to get you to ship before payment is another. Always go directly to PayPal to independently verify the funds are there prior to shipping an item. Don't click on a link to PP in any message. Use your device to input PayPal.com and review the payment that way.

So glad you were smart and checked here first. Sorry you have to endure the new seller pitfalls. Do buy a few inexpensive items on eBay to build up a little feedback. It is sometimes hard to get the buyer to leave feedback and is generally considered bad form to ask a buyer for it. Give it time, buyers will leave it eventually. Best of luck to you!

PS- Consider putting the size, gender, color and item name in the title, for example: New Nike Mens Gray Inversion Crew Neck Tee Shirt Sz Small

Perfect response to the OP - I really like how you summed it up - very important information for a new seller.

It's definitely a scam. Awhile ago, a buyer made an offer which was my bin price. They retracted their offer a few minutes later.

Re: Buyer offering more than selling price.

Sorry no.

Feedback is voluntary and only about 40% of transactions get any feedback. I suspect most of that is left by sellers.

Do leave feedback for your buyer as soon as you ship if only to encourage them.

I restarted an old account recently and although I've made about 20 sales, I only have two feedback as a seller.

Personally, I think the whole feedback system should be dropped in favour of a "number of successful transactions" record.

Probably but it seems some buyers like leaving feedback

Re: Buyer offering more than selling price.

I can't believe how bad the scams have gotten recently. I miss the days when we could report inappropriate messages without there having to be a sale involved. Now you have to call customer support if you want to report something.
