Buyer lying about the condition of product for return

The item is 3 pokemon cards, $40 order shipping+return is ($9.32)

The item was delivered to buyer on 4/14 and the buyer requested return on 4/23. The reason for the return was "Items are not in as good of condition as described."

The only difference is the card price has dropped from $13.99 to around $5-7

My card was listed as Near Mint, I followed eBay's trading card condition guideline. I'm not sure what to do so I called eBay for help with this(1st time return). The representative told me to accept the return and tell them to return the items as fast as possible and don't say anything else. Was promised I would get my return shipping refunded by eBay at the very least.

4/28 I got the return back, the cards are in perfect condition. I called eBay and they told me to fill out a forum for appeal(didn't work), forward me to the next appeal. Was messaged this morning it also didn't work, so I called eBay to see what I can do. Nothing, not even shipping refund.

All they tell me to do is to report the buyer, does reporting really work? Hard to trust eBay after this.

What I'm down: $9.32 + potential sales in that 9 days.

Yes, buyers will lie when they return items. It's fairly common in items that are returned.

I wouldn't spend any more time on the issue. Your time is more valuable selling items than it would be chasing down 10 dollars. I'm not to trivialize your loss, sometimes it feels like death by a 1000 papercuts. But it is the cost of doing business on eBay. You're going to get some bad apples on occasion.

Add the buyer to your blocked buyers list and move on. And be thankful they didn't pull the old "switch-a-roo" on the return.

Condition can be subjective.  For better results selling cards get a flatbed scanner for the images.

Customers lie all the time (this is all part of doing business online).  Don't bother contacting EBAY because they always rule in favor of the customer.

EBAY Money Back Guarantee (supersedes your "no returns policy) allows customers to return item by claiming (not as described, defective, counterfeit).   Customer does NOT have to prove their claims.

You will be forced to refund (purchase price + shipping BOTH ways).   If you appeal case with EBAY they will charge you additional $20 for losing this case.

Sorry but this is all part of selling online (you win some and lose some).

Just to clarify, the $20 fee that eBay levies is only when a buyer opens a dispute with their credit card company. This has nothing to do with eBay’s Money Back Guarantee, which does not require a fee for appeal.

Any buyer can force a return of an item - and even steal it - by filing a fraudulent dispute.

When you sell on eBay, you are always putting the item  and the cost of shipping at risk. And the cost of return shipping if you want to hope that they return the item.

I would just block the buyer and move on. Considering how many items you have for sale...a lot...this would probably hurt the buyer because they can't do a repeat buy. I mean, you have a good share of the market on these trading cards. I have had a few buyers contact me and wonder why they are blocked. I tell them I don't remember since I have a big list of blocked buyers. Some buyers try to return after so many months...especially when I do auctions and they can't bid anymore. Kind of makes my day when I get an email from and old buyer who can't bid or buy anymore from me.

Others already posted good comments. The only other  thing I will add is eBay customer support is pretty much useless these days and they will tell whatever you want to hear even if it is false information to simply get you off the phone.

Sorry this happened but take solace in the fact that it was a minor $10 and you were not totally scammed out of something worth several hundred dollars which happens way too often on eBay.

Nothing can be done except to block that buyer.  This sale is a loss. You have a deduction for your LOSS/Expense side of doing ebay.    Be grateful that they returned your exact cards in the same condition. Some folks get back garbage instead of their actual items.

The problem with selling these cards too is that often it's kids bidding and when the parents find out, they force the kid to return it.  Yes, kids bid all of the time on ebay.  They are not supposed to do that but , in reality, ebay can't control it.

if ebay protected sellers most of these problems would be reduced by over 80 percent

You do need to report the buyer..........that is what the refund on postage is tied to ..........can't get the refund, until you report......no guarantee that you will get it, but without that report........you have no chance........

Block the buyer.  Keep trying to file a report on the buyer for abusing the return system.
