Buyer claims wrong item sent, but actually bought wrong item

I sold a dozen Apple Pencils (2nd Generation) successfully. One buyer was upset that it didn’t fit their older iPad. It seems they previously bought a 1st Generation Apple Pencil on eBay that was mislabeled as a 2nd Generation one. So now they opened a claim that I sent the wrong item. They essentially say that, because I didn’t specify how it is charged (via magnetic connection instead of plugging into the iPad), they claim it was an incorrect item.

The real issue is that they regret buying the wrong item. So far in the conversation I offered the buyer a $40 partial refund (approximately 50%) consolation if they accept it. They haven’t said they’re okay with the partial refund so I didn’t actually submit that yet.

Any advise? Thank you!!

The seller could also ask a question to the buyer during the return attempt and it's possible the buyer does not respond, gives up, and the problem goes away after 30 days.

Hi all,

Following up, the buyer has returned the item, but it is no longer sealed. Does this count as them not returning the item? Or what?

And, it’s appropriate to leave negative feedback for the buyer, right?

It's not possible to leave neg FB for a buyer, and it's against policy to leave a neg comment with a pos rating. If you do that and the buyer reports it you can get in trouble.

No, an unsealed product does not count as "them not returning the item" - it counts as a return that was shipped back in an altered state.

Since you don't meet any of the qualifications for seller protections on returns (ie: Top Rated Seller with returns policy or a seller that offers free returns, etc) you do not have any recourse to send a partial refund.

You can report the buyer again (instructions in post 12 above) for returning the item in an altered state.

Make sure the buyer is added to your blocked list.
