I am getting dinged from customers claiming they've received faulty items. When item is returned (me having paid for return shipping) the item works as it should and is not faulty. I offer 30-day returns. How can i avoid this hurting my selling standing?

If you're refunding upon receipt, then there should be no dings. Some buyers use the item not as described to avoid paying return shipping.

Are you responding to the cases on time?If Ebay steps in you will get a defect. How is buyer 'standing' reduced?

A return for not as described counts against you.

Did you fail to refund ALL returns once you got the item back? If, after getting the item back, you did not refund would end up as "case closed without seller resolution" defects.
Open the Seller level page and see what defects are affecting your standing.
