Buyer Scam - Motorcycle

We advertised a motorcycle on ebay and an interested buyer contacted us. He sent us a check to purchase the motorcycle and for  us to pay the shipper.  We forwarded funds to the shipper.  He then told us the next day that the shipper had covid and he died and he wanted us to send money to another shipper.  We refused to send any more money until we received more funds.  He said he could not afford the shipper and asked us to return l of his funds  via Zelle.  We went to our bank to make sure the check the buyer sent had clear and the bank indicated that it had.  We sent the money back.  Two days later the bank contacted us that the check was returned as fraudulent.  This buyer  scammed us out of the $9800.  BEWARE OF THIS SCAM!!  I can't get a hold of ebay to report this due to the fact that we have to have a closed transaction to report them anything.  How absurd!

Nothing I can post here will help you, sorry.

But what I do post might help someone else who reads this.

Red flag #1: the scammer bought a $9K motorcycle sight-unseen over the internet

Red flag #2: the scammer paid with a check

Red flag #3: the scammer sent more than the selling price

Red flag #4: the scammer wanted the seller to hire his shipper

Red flag #5: the seller assumed that a "cleared" check could not be returned

Red flag #6: the scammer paid by check but wanted his refund by Zelle

Re: Buyer Scam - Motorcycle

Come on, sending you money to pay the shipper is the oldest trick in the book.  Not your responsibility.

And you can certainly report the buyer from links in the my ebay listings page.  Not that it does any good.  However you do have a mail fraud case to report if the check was mailed to you.

Re: Buyer Scam - Motorcycle

you should call your local police and tell them about this

they can enter all the info on the ebay law enforcement portal if they want but it really has nothing to do with ebay

Re: Buyer Scam - Motorcycle

on ebay help pages look up ebay law enforcement and file a police report on the scammer. Make sure you block the dead beat as well.

They likely do, however, they have been scammed out of $9800.

The check was no good and they have sent $9800 to the scammer..

This is awful @tcafef_s4ihnssmj  PLEASE file all the reports you can and talk to your bank to try to get the funds reversed..

I am very sorry..

Re: Buyer Scam - Motorcycle

I don't get how a bank can clear a check then days later go "oops out bad, it's fake". I mean come on, that seems like a huge loophole that should not still be going on in 2021...

I was wondering the same thing jonathan, that bank of Ops should take some kind of responsibility with this transaction. Unless it's Chase, read where they've been depositing/debiting billions into several folks accounts by mistake.

Re: Buyer Scam - Motorcycle

Amazing that in 2021 people are falling for this. How could you possibly not know that this was a scam?

You are lucky it was only $9800. It sounds like if they offered some magical coins or something like that they could have taken you for every penny you have.

That depends upon exactly what the OP asked the bank, and exactly what the bank told the OP.

Read this article for more insight:

Did That Check Really Clear?

When is it safe to spend that money?

https://www.thebalance.com/clearing-checks-risks-and-scams-315292

"Most of the confusion around checks comes from bank policies and federal laws that allow you to spend money before a check clears. Banks are required to make a portion of your deposit available quickly—usually the first $200 or, on certain official checks, $5,000—and they might need to release the remaining funds after several business days. But that policy might prematurely provide access to the money. It does not mean the funds successfully arrived from the check writer’s bank."

And even if the check did clear and the balance was actually transferred from one bak to another, that does not mean the check was not fraudulently issued. If the account holder does not recognize the check and disputes it, it could be reversed. (Did you know you can buy a MICR laser printer right here on eBay?)

I'm sorry but that's really rather mean..

There are a good many people that are HONEST and don't understand these types of scams because they don't think that way.

They are hard wired with integrity and sadly fall prey to this type of thing.

My husband can play a mean MMO game but as far as buying stuff online? NO freaking way!

That's my department because I keep up on the latest scam tactics.

Let's remember it's the thieving scammer that's the bad guy here NOT the honest guy just trying to sell his bike.

Agree.  Ridiculous and then they just send by snail mail.  No e-mail or call regarding the bad check.
