We advertised a motorcycle on ebay and an interested buyer contacted us. He sent us a check to purchase the motorcycle and for us to pay the shipper. We forwarded funds to the shipper. He then told us the next day that the shipper had covid and he died and he wanted us to send money to another shipper. We refused to send any more money until we received more funds. He said he could not afford the shipper and asked us to return l of his funds via Zelle. We went to our bank to make sure the check the buyer sent had clear and the bank indicated that it had. We sent the money back. Two days later the bank contacted us that the check was returned as fraudulent. This buyer scammed us out of the $9800. BEWARE OF THIS SCAM!! I can't get a hold of ebay to report this due to the fact that we have to have a closed transaction to report them anything. How absurd!

They do.
They have this whole big page full of "bewares":
https://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/stay_safe.html
"Never accept overpayments from buyers for items, especially if the buyer asks to be reimbursed for overpayment. Requests like this are often part of a counterfeit cashier's check scheme."
And another one here, specifically about payments:

"Never accept overpayments from buyers for items, especially if the buyer asks to be reimbursed for overpayment. Requests like this are often part of a counterfeit cashier's check scheme."

You were scammed. File a police report! Forget ebay they will not help.

We get it -- you are too smart to have this happen to you.
But there was no need to rub the OP's face in it.
"You are lucky it was only $9800". One of the most egregious messages I've ever seen here. How do we know this wasn't 6 months pay to him? Sometimes we really need to take a step or two in another's footwear.

I think the OP will have fixed this by now, they posted over 12 months ago
