Buyer Retracting a Bid

So...EBAY is setting a new policy that buyers can only retract bids on sports cards if the seller allows him/her to do so. My question then is what are the consequences for a buyer that is not allowed to retract a bid. If that bidder wins the auction he simply won't pay and since a seller can't leave negative feedback for a buyer, I see no repercussions. What am I missing?

They get a strike, which is a slap  tap on the wrist.

"EBAY is setting a new policy that buyers can only retract bids on sports cards if the seller allows him/her to do so" citation please for this given that eBay rarely announces changes they intend to make, they just announce them when done.

Haven't heard about this. Can you provide a link? I don't see this on Announcements page. Did you get an email about it, or what?

Correct, there are no repercussions to buyers directly from sellers on this platform....

Then let the buyer retract their bid if you are worried they won't pay. Also you can never leave a buyer a negative anyway.

Funny thing is, it doesn't change anything. A buyer can still just not pay and will get a slap on the wrist. Even if they feel (or are) somehow compelled to pay anyway, they could leave negative feedback based on "their opinion" and eBay will refuse to remove it; they could also just do a chargeback on their credit card, get the item for free and the seller will get socked with a chargeback fee to boot. For all practical purposes, if they want to cancel a bid you have to let them, nothing changed.

You really answered your own question in the OP.

Let them retract - or they will end up being the buyer from he!!.

Also, every retraction is listed on their account for other sellers to see if they bid on their items.

I know little about Trading Cards other than they are better scanned than photographed.  But what got me was the first sentence in the email from eBay:

"Based on feedback from our Trading Cards seller community, we are updating our bid retraction policy"

Huh?  Could it possibly be true sellers actually have a say?  That's way bigger news than anything about bid retractions.

The buyer gets a strike for non-payment.  You can set your preferences to block buyers who have 2 or more non-payment strikes in a year.

Or the buyer pays, receives the card, opens an INAD claim, and you will refund in full and pay return shipping. I can't see a scenario where refusing a bid retraction is a good idea.

This is the best I can do, keep getting warning messages as seen at the bottom.

Based on feedback from our Trading Cards seller community, we are updating our bid retraction policy for Sports Trading Cards, Non-Sports Trading Cards, and Collectible Card Games auctions. Starting June 30, 2021, buyers will no longer have the ability to retract bids on Trading Cards auctions without the seller’s approval. Sellers may accept or reject auction bid retraction requests at their sole discretion, however, we encourage sellers to use their best judgment and give buyers the benefit of the doubt. Sellers who decline bid retraction requests will not be subject to any consequences and buyers will have the ability to appeal, but please keep in mind that honest mistakes happen.

We expect the change will significantly reduce the percentage of auction bids retracted by buyers.

Starting June 30, if a Trading Card buyer wishes to retract an auction bid, they will need to contact the seller via messaging on eBay to request a retraction. The seller will, at their sole discretion, be able to accept or reject the buyer’s retraction request. If the seller does not accept the request, the buyer’s auction bid can still win or lose the auction, and they will be accountable for the outcome. As noted at the bottom of the auction listing: “You can only retract your bid under certain circumstances.” Buyers are also informed on the ‘Retract a Bid ’ that “a bid is a binding contract.”

As of April 2021, if an item goes unpaid by the 5th calendar day, you may cancel the order due to non-payment. Regularly missing payments may impact a buyer’s account. Check out our Unpaid Item Policy to learn more.

We appreciate your support and willingness to work with this new policy, as we anticipate our trading cards policy update will make eBay a more trusted and fairer marketplace for all.
