Broken

I haven't sold on eBay in a while. But I have sold many items on eBay. My track record is perfect, never a return. But, my funds are on hold. It seems eBay is now broken. No reason is given for the hold, except that when you're a new seller, they hold your funds. I am not a new seller. I tried talking to customer service, they really didn't have any help to offer. I checked my deposit preferences, bank account and PayPal. I tried setting my bank, again as my deposit preference, instead it set some kind of eBay selling costs as my bank preferences and to five dollars out of my account. There is no way to change it back. My Funds are still on hold, again no reason, eBay is ditched. Erase your account, it's nothing but thievery now. It's sad to erase a 20-year-old account, but things have definitely gone south around here.

That means you're a new seller (in ebay's eyes).

I don't know how long you were away, but a lot has changed.

Did you enroll and get approved for managed payments?

If you haven't sold for a few months then they consider you a "new" seller and will hold your funds for a given amount of time.

It really does suck but scammers look for dormant accounts to hijack so I do understand it. Not sure if I fully agree with it though.

I recently got active after an extended period not listing, same happened to me. It had happened to me before when I significantly ramped up my listings. It's an automatic hold. Should be resolved quickly and it'll be behind you. There's a fairly good reason for it, believe it or not. Also a good reason for the lack of transparency on the issue.

I would say eBay considers you a new seller, and you will just have to show eBay you are trustworthy again.

"This information will be available when this member receives at least 10 detailed seller ratings."

Feedback received as seller shows more than a year ago.

It's frustrating and annoying, but with all the scams out there, companies must protect themselves as well as their customers. It's not trust and verify, it's verify and trust.

eBay uses the term New or Infrequent!

New or infrequent sellers will experience transaction holds while learning best selling practices. This helps sellers become established and build a strong selling history on eBay. New sellers typically experience holds for up to 14 days, although sometimes it may be longer.

Your sales history from years ago is not relevant to today.

Hmm, Ok, being an old timer, I was used to selling and having the funds in my account immediately. Now they hold it and don't really say why.

Maybe, but that is just ridiculous. I haven't changed, eBay has. It should not reflect on me.

I haven't sold on eBay in a while.

EBay/Managed Payments and Paypal before it, puts a Hold on new, occasional and returning sellers.

Until you've been selling for 90 days and sold 25 items your payments will be held until tracking shows delivered, or in 21 days if there's no tracking. They can hold the payment for the full 21 days if you're selling in a high risk category.  For non-US sellers this seems to be 30 days.

I checked my deposit preferences, bank account and PayPal. I

Have you set up a Managed Payments account? Paypal is no longer in play for sellers (although Buyers are still using it.)

This is another reason eBay puts that Hold on returning sellers. Most are unaware of the changeover ~two years ago.

There have been other changes returnees are unaware of. You'd be amazed at how many returning sellers are unaware that they cannot leave negative feedback for buyers. Nevermind suddenly discovering that eIS means they ship overseas.

tried setting my bank, again as my deposit preference, instead it set some kind of eBay selling costs as my bank preferences and to five dollars out of my account.

That sounds like you chose to use microdeposits as identification. You will need your SSN and a second form of ID. If the micro-deposit is not working, try using your passport or driving license.

And all your names must match.
If your name is John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith,

you cannot have a bank account as J J  Jingleheimer Smith ,

a Managed Payment account as John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith,

and an eBay account as JJJ Smith.

I tried talking to customer service, they really didn't have any help to offer.

On the phone? Don't bother.

The phone reps have a terrible reputation for getting you off the phone as soon as possible even if that means giving you the advice you want to hear instead of the advice you need to have.

The social media Chat accounts are covered by trained eBay employees with some authority.
And you get a transcript so you can compare what you heard with what you were told.

Start by asking for a Managed Payments specialist. Read the transcripts.

Because social media Chats are slow, write out your question and proofread it before posting it, you have lots of time.

You may find the weekend is not the best time, not because the agents are any worse (or in Manila) but because there are fewer working and more confused sellers calling.

Hi and welcome back, @applesave ! I am also an old-timer.

EBay does say why. Did you read the link to the policy that @slippinjimmy provided in post #7? It explains everything. No mystery here.

eBay has changed considerably in 20 years. How one conducted business here in the past is different from the way one conducts business here at present. You will need to bring yourself up to speed. Keep in mind: these holds are just temporary while you are in the eBay learning curve.

Good luck and wish you much success upon your return.

I was used to selling and having the funds in my account immediately.

When you are verified, your customer's payment will go to your MP account immediately, less the fees charged on the sale*.

The default is that those payments will transfer to your checking account weekly, on Tuesdays sort of like a weekly paycheck.

But.

You can choose to have daily transfers. This is useful for very busy sellers with dozens of sales daily.

Or.

If your bank charges you for deposits, you may prefer monthly transfers. This also means that you are more likely to have money in your MP account when monthly fees (like Store subscriptions) come around.   Or you may only sell occasionally, and prefer the monthly payment like AZ.

*And that's another thing you may be unfamiliar with.

Look, the most common accounts to be hijacked are those who are longstanding, but have fairly low feedback for the time they've been live, and haven't been used in some time. These accounts are advertised and sold online.

The past is NOT relevant to now, because there's no audit trail between the past and now.  There is no way to prove anything.  If someone had hijacked your account and started listing on it, I expect (and would hope) you'd be raising the roof over it.  Why doesn't eBay double check this stuff, etc. etc.

ETA: And eBay doesn't *know* you haven't changed. This isn't a small garage sale company with personal communication between vendors and owners, it's a website with millions of users daily and over a billion items.

Hang in there - the hold will be resolved!

I haven't changed, eBay has.

You are being asked to prove you are you and that you really own the bank account you claim.

Does your 10 year old driving license look like you? Your high school graduation picture?

That you are not sitting in an internet cafe in Lagos or a boiler room in Minsk, trolling online?
