Best Offer accepted pending payment?

Can someone explain to me why the Best Offer feature doesn’t  include an option that only accepts the offer after payment is made by the buyer?   I’ve sold the same item 3 times now by way of accepting an offer and all 3 times the buyer never paid after I accepted their offer. Each time of course there’s a 4 day grace period that you need to wait for the buyer to pay and the item isn’t available to any other potential buyers. Why can’t it be that the offer is placed by the buyer, if the seller accepts, the listing still stays there until the buyer pays?  That way there’s no down time for the listing and I the seller can still keep all the watchers who are potentially interested.  There could even be a message sent to the buyer that goes something like “Great news, the seller has accepted your offer!  The item is almost yours, you just need to make payment to secure it. Please understand that until payment is made, the item can still be sold to another interested buyer. So make that payment quick to ensure it’s coming home to you!”.   Not exactly that, but you get the idea.  I’m sure I’m missing a reason of why it can’t happen this way, so please feel free to enlighten me.

If you read the 2022 Winter Seller Update and the 2022 Spring Seller Update, you'll find eBay is rolling out what is essentially an "immediate payment required" feature for offers.

As mentioned above, those changes are in the works. You can read about it here.

In the meantime, you can get around the issue by setting up immediate payment required and if you agree to an offer price with a buyer, instead of countering their offer you can decline their offer and change the price of the listing to the agreed upon offer price. That way they're forced to pay if they want the item and they need to make a timely decision since it's now open to anybody at that price.

You can make sure your buyer blocks are set to limit purchases by buyers with 2+ unpaid items, settings found here.

Except that path has its own issues.  I don't lower a listing price because often, as I extend an offer to a buyer, some other buyer purchases the widget at full price.  Extending an offer is hedging my bets against lowering my price for one and all.

Re: Best Offer accepted pending payment?

Here's part of the problem. I just made an offer on an item, but before I could submit the offer I had to choose my payment type. I did that and received a message "We will not charge your card unless the offer is accepted." Something to that effect. The offer was accepted and when I look under my purchased items it says "Your Payment is Pending"  If I go directly back to the listing there is a button to Pay Now. I go back to my invoices and it says your payment is pending with no "Pay Now" option. I'm now reluctant to pay for fear of being charged twice since they already told me my card will be charged once accepted. Plus they put the confusing "Your payment is pending" tag. Yet another failed roll out that only makes things more confusing.
