What is this eBay automated feedback? It looks like fake reviews — the same feedback appears twice.

It is meant to help sellers with less than 10 feedback. However if the buyer decides to still leave feedback, this will disappear and whatever the buyer posts will replace it. It is a very good thing IMHO and hopefully will help new sellers from getting targeted by scammers.

It's just feedback Ebay gives newer sellers when the buyer don't leave any feedback.

Now people are complaining about positive feedback.

I don't need no stinkin' positive feedback.

What? When did eBay start this? On the contrary to what the OP thinks, I think this change is amazing for new selling accounts.
What criteria is needed for eBay to deem an account as a new seller? Does eBay stop doing this for new sellers when their feedback hits a certain score? Or does it stop when the account reaches a certain age?

Some people just refuse to let themselves be happy.

When I was a seller (many moons ago, different ID) sellers (and maybe buyers?) had the ability to have canned positive feedback already available and to have it automatically left when a buyer pays. So that's not what this is?

Last I checked only sellers had the ability to have automated feedback settings to leave for buyers. I recall the 3 choices the seller can choose when the automated feedback would kick in is when 1) immediately, 2) when the buyer pays, or 3) when the buyer leaves a positive feedback.
I assume this is still the current system. I don’t know because I use a 3rd party automated feedback system.
In response to the OP, I’d much rather have these positive “fake review” feedbacks from these buyers than no feedback at all. Who cares what the comment says, you just got a higher feedback score because of it and you didn’t have to hound the buyer to leave it. Now that I think about it, I wouldn’t mind if ebay allowed sellers to opt out of receiving these types of feedbacks if they have problems with it. I’ll just start a new seller account and outscore those sellers in no time by opting into it.

started many months back.
as posted, just for new sellers. Criteria and when it stops is determined by ebay super-secret calculation

I think it stops when the new seller reaches (10). Some relatively low number like that. This started maybe a year ago in the UK and apparently is now on the US site as well.
If the buyer does leave feedback then their comment replaces the default one that Ebay put in.

@soh.maryl No, that's not what this is. This is left by eBay for newer sellers when a tx has been completed.
@iamalwaysright several months in the US, but been done in Europe for awhile now. I don't recall the exact requirements & I am on my way out the door, but there were guidelines. If no one else pops in with them I'll try to remember to look it up later.
