Auto make offer can offend buyers if sellers don’t know its on

wow. I just made a $12 offer on a $13 item because the make offer was on even though it was already seemingly priced fairly right to me, but hey, the make offer was on so okay, I thought I was making a respectable offer. It was immediately declined with no counter and no message. I moved on. I suspect the seller was offended by my offer because he/she doesn’t know the make offer is even on, maybe? Anyway, I was like YIKES, okay! LOL! Ebay really should rethink that auto-offer thing. As a seller, it scares me. As a buyer, I’m getting gun shy about making offers!

@mr_lincoln No, I do not use the quick listing tool and best offer was added to 11 of my listings this week without my consent. It is now listed at the top of my seller hub active listings.

I get the unsolicited offers on items sometimes too, but most of the time its from a customer who has purchased from me before and the offers are reasonable or close to it; I don’t mind that at all. Sometimes though, they’re so ridiculously low that I assume they’re a scam. I will usually respond with either a counter or ignore them. Collectors in my category are generally pretty savvy about prices relative to condition and all that. But this one was for $1 and they were soliciting because the make offer was on lol.

As a seller, that is exactly my fear! Thank you for sharing that! (Hence why I asked in an earlier post how to tell when my GTC listings get relisted. Got the answer; have to go to a desktop and look at it from the website; I use app for everything.)

Because it was immediate and there was no counter and no message. Seemed odd for $1.

That would seem to be a seller who put auto decline at very high threshold. Which is strange, cause why would they even bother having best offer then?

Wow, now that is a real concern that eBay has decided to blatantly start adding B.O. to listings.  I haven't experienced that ...

eBay adds Best offers to new or occasional sellers that eBay believes to be over priced after 8 days.

Everyone has options. Just be sure the best option is right for you.

Why would you be offended or gun shy if an offer was declined, be it automatically or manually?

It's an offer between random strangers for an item listed on the internet, not a diss at your spouse/child/relative.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

“Random strangers on the internet”... hmmm... I’ll have to think about that. Probably as much as half my sales are from customers who have bought from me before, so we kind of know each other in a way; not like friends, but there is a customer relationship. And I tend to buy probably half my purchases from sellers I’ve bought from before so, same, there is somewhat of a customer relationship. So, I wasn’t at all offended, there were plenty of other sellers with that same item at similar pricing. But you do have a very good point. We’re all strangers, the new world. Auto this, auto that. Auto decline. Auto-relist. Auto GTC. Auto auto auto among strangers. You’re right, but if I took that approach, I think I might lose those who do like the personal attention to their buying experience. Meaning, for some of us, buying collectibles or expensive items and such, its just nice knowing there is an owner/seller at the other end who cares. You asked a great question. Will definitely think about that. But doesn’t change any impressions that auto-offer is giving buyers other than me who don’t come here to get educated on the new culture.  That was my point 🐵

I agree that eBay's decision to add the BO option to listings without the seller initiating it is a bad idea.  Alas!  It appears that eBay has no shortage of bad ideas to choose from when looking for things to do.

Personally, I would probably not make an offer on something that I thought was already reasonably priced.  Especially when that offer was merely for $1 less than the asking price.  However, the seller may merely not want to haggle so they set the auto decline to not accept anything below the asking price to counter eBay's bad choice of adding the BO option in the first place.

I'm a tad bit curious as to why, as a seller yourself, you have a record of bid retractions showing.  Care to elaborate?

I don’t know what you mean. I had a guy accidentally  bid 255 instead of 25 on an item. He messaged me letting me know his error and can he retract. I said yes, of course. That’s the only I am aware of. Oh, I had one cancel AFTER the auction because he thought the clothes were included with the doll even though the doll was shown nude and nude was in both the title and the description. I don’t know of any others.

And where are you seeing that on my account??? I don’t even see that on my account! So there data sets about sellers that I could be looking at and don’t know about?

You cancelling bids, and buyers retracting are not what that is about.

For some reason eBay seems to think that you, as a buyer,  retracted bids 3 times in the past 12 months.

That’s weird. I left ebay in April, came back about a month ago. I don’t know of any bids I’ve retracted. And I’ve bought quite a bit. Where are you seeing that? Because if that’s what ebay is saying, I need to call them. Trying to think if I retracted any back in the spring before I left and can’t think of any. But again, where are you seeing that???
