I sniped some collectibles recently for about $100, they can probably be sold off piece mail for $300. So I decided to snipe the auction and I won for $100. I paid instantly and then 20 minutes later I was refunded and got a note saying the item is out of stock. When I questioned the seller he states he changed his mind and wanted to give these items to his brothers kid instead. Really? Im thinking he is just kicking himself for not putting in a reserve bid. What would you guys do?

Any seller pulling this kind of stunt deserves a negative at the very least. Also a complaint to eBay. Makes us all look bad!!!!!!

Happens all the time. Sellers expect a certain price but when they don't get it one gets refunded. eBay says "Oh well" .

You received the refund, you could just let it go.
OR
If you want you can leave the seller neutral or negative feedback to let other buyers know about what occured.

I'm sure he did, that's what they all say. As a result, the seller received a defect for item being OOS. Ebay cannot force the seller to sell to you, frustrating I know. But you can leave appropriate feedback for the seller as you see fit.

It sounds like this was a negative experience.
Do check out the formal reason why seller canceled. If it was dishonest, that would be an additional negative experience.

Neg them like the hammer of Thor!
Especially if they cancel the transaction and claim it was "buyer requested".
Actions like this do two thing.......it chases good buyers away, buyer who then badmouth eBay sellers in general. Plus it leads to eBay tightening the screws on all sellers because of the bad behaviour of a small minority.

When a seller lists an auction, their only expectation should be that if they get the opening bid, they will be paid that amount. If they need more for their item, they need to start at a higher price.

Seller did more harm to himself than anything you can do, and he was honest about it.
If you are still upset there are color donuts on the feedback page for that reason.
But he canceled it "out of stock" that hurts more than anything else, to many of those in a short time period and he won't be able to sell here any more.

He told the OP it was cancelled because it was out of stock, bet you the seller uses Buyer Requested when they formally cancel with eBay or tries some other trick to avoid the defect.

It shows on the cancel email the buyer gets what reason they used. At least it used to... has that changed when I wasn't paying attention?

I once sold something valued it about $100 with free shipping when I was new to eBay and guess what, it sold for 1.49$. Free shipping costed me roughly 20$. Shipped it anyway, because that is how you learn. You never forget an expensive mistake like that. You leave the seller a big fat neg.

No it hasn't changed but the OP wasn't crystal clear when he posted "the seller told me", perhaps it was an official cancellation notice or perhaps it was just a message from the seller.

I assumed (and I know better) "got a note" = Cancel email that is generated when the cancel goes through... cause then the op said he talked to the seller, and that's when the seller told him was giving it to the kids.
