Attempted scam - how do I report?

I posted a high value item today and within minutes was contacted by a buyer asking to pay the pay now price and even a tad more for rushed shipping. He also asked if PayPal was ok and essentially wanted to take the item off eBay. No go. Anyway, since it is not an actual transaction and won’t be, can I still alert eBay? I did also do some googling and it looks like the same “buyer” has been using very similar email addresses for years on here and almost identical messaging to others.

As others have pointed out, this is something you should really re think selling here on Ebay.  This item is far too expensive for a new, inexperienced seller to be selling and you're setting yourself up for a lot of problems.  You need to familiarize yourself with Ebay's money back guarantee and the selling platform as a whole.  No returns does not mean no refunds.

I would sell this locally for cash until you get some more selling experience under your belt.  I would also consider looking into this forum to get some help and insight about selling on ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy....

https://community.ebay.com/t5/New-to-selling-on-eBay/bd-p/Starting_an_eBay_Business

I would look into both of these links before attempting to sell anything else.  I would also consider using the fixed, buy it now option w/ immediate payment required checked off as well.  Don't bother with best offers or you will have the same types annoying you and not paying.

Good luck and Happy Selling.

what blows my mind is that we all know about this issue. eBay knows it, PayPal knows it, and probably all other selling / payment sites know this, but these sites don't take any legal action and contact authorities to stop these crooks.

You were smart to ignore.   If you read some posts here, there are several new sellers that got scammed by the fake Paypal email that they have been paid.  To all new sellers or infrequent sellers remember this,

ALL PAYMENTS COME FROM MANAGED PAYMENTS.

I suggest to all new sellers or those who have few feedback, please add the following to your description and this will scare away many scammers.

All payments MUST go through the Ebay PAY NOW now.  ALL payments are VERIFIED in MY EBAY before I ship an item.  ALL items will ONLY be shipped to the address provided when the payment arrives.  All communication will ONLY be done through the Ebay message system. ALL questions MUST be asked before you bid/buy.

NOw if anyone here does not know what MY EBAY is or how to verify a payment, please start a new post.  Inorder to sell successfully and have a lower chance of getting scammed, you need to know where MY Ebay is and how to use it.   Frankly, it's the best thing that ebay has done since I started here in 1998 (with another ID).
