Anyone ever use Secure Local Pickup?

I find myself in need of selling some large items such as Hemi engines,  Milling Machines and other large heavy shop items..

Does anyone have experience using secure pickup? Good or bad? Anything I need to be careful of?

Re: Anyone ever use Secure Local Pickup?

For what it's worth you have to offer an electronic method for pickups. That means they can pay with their credit card, get it home and say it doesn't work and hit the return this item button.  eBay would force you to provide a return label and refund when tracking shows you received it, or you can refund and let them keep it.

You should offer it for sale on CL or somewhere it can be a cash only sale.

Proof of pickup

Proof of pickup is required to protect you against item not received cases.

For proof of pickup you can:

  • use the eBay app to scan the QR code the buyer received through email
  • use the eBay app to manually enter the 6-digit code the buyer received through email

All secure local pickup does is provide you with delivery confirmation. It does not protect you from payment disputes.

I would never sell anything locally without a cash payment, but eBay I believe eBay requires you to offer managed payments as an option.

I've done about a dozen local pickup transactions. None have been problematic.

Accept cash only, list an alternate form of e-payment per eBay rules

For smaller items meet in a public place

Enter or scan the QR code once exchanged

I've never had a return or anything like that so can't comment about that.

Re: Anyone ever use Secure Local Pickup?

Ive had several local pick up items,no problems at all. And two were very pricey. Tho I requested cash on pick up, two paid with Paypal..no problems with that either. Couldnt have gone smoother..and one buyer drove from Arizona to Chicago to buy my antique barber chair.

Re: Anyone ever use Secure Local Pickup?

@the_fancy_foxWe do Local pickups quite a bit, but for items that are smaller than what you are selling. BTW, ebay does say that even if a buyer pays cash on a local pickup, they can still open a return, although  we've never had a buyer open a return on Local Pickup. I saw that another poster here said you'd have to issue a return label, which I something I never considered. We have sold some larger items on Fb marketplace - Local only, no shipping. CL too, but less often.

I would make sure that your listing shows/details any defects. That way you have proof on ebay that you were up front about defects and the buyer is aware of the condition of the item. I would also message the buyer on ebay after they purchase, asking them to confirm that they are aware of ... then list details. I used to be surprised at people who would then  cancel a purchase even though the title and description both said For Parts, As-Is. I'm not surprised any more. Good Luck!
