Any seller protection?

Hi All,

I'm not a very active seller on eBay, so I don't have a ton of experience in this regard. I recently sold an old iPod classic. Actively used it for a week to ensure it was working as it was supposed to before listing. Right away the buyer wanted to return because they said the backlight wasn't working, so I responded on how to use the backlight and all was well. A few days later (today) I get a notification that they are requesting to return because the battery won't hold a charge.  I seriously doubt that the battery suddenly stopped working in the first few days that they had it.

So if I accept the return, I get stuck paying for shipping (and do I get my eBay/PayPal fees back?). And what if I can verify that it actually is working? Or what if they opened it up and did something to it?  Maybe these are just risks of selling on eBay and I just need to limit the categories I play in.

Re: Any seller protection?

If you follow the directions inside the return request you will get your eBay FVF's fees credited,

If the buyer opens a not as described return request then it really does not matter if you can prove the item works perfectly or not, You agreed to the MBG (money back guarantee) terms when you listed the item.

If you get back something other than what you sent you can report the return request and eBay has said they are looking into these reports with much more research than in the past.

Here are a couple links that might be helpful to you

Re: Any seller protection?

I sold a new item and the buyer, after initially leaving positive feedback, claimed a few days later that it wasn't working properly. When I got it back, it worked flawlessly with no sign whatsoever of malfunction as described by the buyer. I think he just changed his mind or found it cheaper elsewhere but didn't want to pay for postage to send it back. If it had malfunctioned as the buyer claimed, it wouldn't have worked at all when I received it back.

After working for two weeks with no problems whatsoever, I relisted it but of course now I'm listing a used item with an instruction manual the buyer returned in less than perfect condition.

I think it's important to report buyers who abuse the MBG.

Near the same time I also had another return but that was legitimate, so not everyone abuses it.

eBay is riskier to list on that in the past, I believe, and as a result I'm limiting what I sell, particularly electronics and heavier items, and the more expensive camera equipment I had planned to sell.

(I didn't list it under this ID)

Re: Any seller protection?

Thanks for the responses.... all about what I figured. The situation just went south. I responded and asked the buyer to perform a couple simple troubleshooting steps (different charger, different outlet, plugging directly to the PC), and she immediately got rude and told me it's obvious that I wasn't willing to work with her on the return and that she'd be taking it up with eBay directly. SMH.... people are incredible.

Re: Any seller protection?

Bottom line

do not sell expensive items on ebay, it will not save you from happening such situation again, you cant win from bad buyers, when its comes to returns so better is to get rid it off.even though eBay close case in your favor , still bad buyer can reach to pay pal and get his money back. please visit this link it will give you some info about seller protection

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-protection?id=4345&st=3&pos=1&query=Selle...

my fair suggestion is to accept returns even you have to pay shipping cost, if you argue with bad buyer he might damage your item and return it to you and you can only report the buyer to ebay but nothing will happen. so little loosing is better then loosing all.

ebay should bring something effective for protecting the sellers.

Re: Any seller protection?

Sorry to hear things did not go well. Unfortunately if eBay is asked to step in it can easily result in a defect for the seller. The false MBG claims are beyond frustrating, and costly.
