Another Thing eBay is Copying Amazon On...

Just saw this...Looks like it is only on the AU site. I'm sure it will make it to the US site after they are done testing it there. Wow.

Why can't ebay realize that while the original Mona Lisa is worth millions, a copy of the Mona Lisa is only worth maybe $19.99. And a not very good copy of the Mona Lisa has no value at all

Amazon's net income in Q1 2018 was $1.62 billion, but eBay's was not too shabby at $548 million.

So I think eBay has clearly demonstrated there is plenty of value in their "copy".

And plenty of people seem to be using that copy - you still have listings here, after all!

That is so true, but think of how much Better that $548 milion could have been had they managed to sustain growth like the other ecommerce sites.  If only their egos could have tolerated being referred to as the Worlds Largest Flea Market, the roles might have actually been reversed but we will never know.  Amazon kept losing money year after year until Ebay shot themselves in the foot one to many times and gave them the opening.

By the way - how much did Ebay lose in 2017 due to a one time adjustment?  A little over $1 billion loss.  Admittedly they chose the timing for the loss that they felt was most beneficial, but either way its still a huge loss for the year due to an almost $3.3 billion one time adjustment.

eBay wants to make money, Amazon wants to make a great site.

What eBay misses is that in order to make money you have to have a great site.

Give sellers eBay bucks so they buy things. Sell $1000 worth of stuff and get a $25 certificate. Offer a function so that if someone sells $100 worth of stuff and then uses that money to buy $100 worth of stuff eBay throws in something.

They were giving eBay bucks away (I think it was a few months ago) for selling. I wish they would do more though. Smiley Sad

I don't list the good stuff here, it used to be on ebay.  My good stuff is now on a site that isn't a copy of Amazon, in fact Amazon is trying to incorporate what they are doing to their site.  And ebay just keeps driving  more and more away by trying to pick an extra nickle out of everyone's pocket.

Thanks for the heads up and information. Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but after looking at the video it appears they're piloting a Prime membership program clone in Europe that will most likely make it elsewhere if successful.

And yet, ebay is promoting No Membership fees on their new shrewd marketing promo.  Like everything else ebay builds - the foundation is quicksand, expect it to change and shift at a moments notice.

Yes, eBay took a $3+ billion charge in Q4 2017, related to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. Many other companies did the same thing; for instance J.P. Morgan Chase also took a $2+ billion charge that same quarter.

You make it sound like that was a negative thing. But you understand why that happened, right?

It was because overnight, their corporate tax rate dropped from 35% to 21%. So the value of their deferred tax deductions and credits - which are accounted for as an asset - dropped accordingly, because they will be paying a whole lot less in corporate taxes for the next 10 years. Corporations paying less in taxes is a good thing for their bottom line, not a bad thing.

That's really a good idea.    Keep the money on ebay and everybody benefits.

We already have ebay bucks for buyers.   1% with an occasional bump up to 6% or 8% for certain categories for a day or two.

1% is better than nothing,   I guess.

I like how you finally get premium customer service, not like what we get now... hahaha admitted

So do they want us to start charging shipping again now? Is that why they set it up to want to charge for shipping when you offer free returns huh... It's funny they obviously have a plan, it's just a big secret.

Why does it matter about different venues using a successful feature?  Who cares who had it first?  Walmart, home depot, etc lots of selling sites use similar ideas.

eBay has third party sellers before Amaz did

eBay had auctions before Amaz failed at them

eBay had sellers stores before Amaz did

eBay sold worldwide before Amaz did

Lots of things each venue has that worked out well for the industry and I do not see any issue with using something one palce is successful with at other places.

Gas stations uses to just pump gas, change tires, add oil.  At some point they started selled convience items and others followed.

a grocery store used a conveyer belt to move the grocery down a track to be rung up, all the others have followed.

Lots of example how our lives are improved by great inovation, and used industry wide.

Good Luck Selling!

eBay may have done the things you listed above first, but now Amazon is doing other things first and eBay is copying them. I find that interresting.

Interesting....did anyone notice that they are also rolling out fulfilment centers with the new program in AU? Will that be coming to the USA?

___________

I am not really sure but I think there is some talk about it for larger manufacturers overseas (Asian manufacture markets).  I recall many eBay forum users were upset that the small Asian sellers would now be able to ship from the US but I doubt a small Asian seller could absorb at US living standards warehousing costs and services.  It would not be a free program for the users.

So these sellers who would use this service would have higher item costs if they are going to absorb these fulfillment services costs.  I think ebay is in a wait and see area because it appears quite a large percentage of US addressed buyers do not seem to mind waiting a couple weeks for there overseas purchases.

There are already dozens of fulfillment centers in the US .  Here is a partial list of some.  Click Here

Good Luck Selling!

No offense but our country is MASSIVE and covering the postage would bankrupt Ebay.  Im not optimistic about that.

Ebay wouldn't cover the shipping...the sellers would pay it to be part of the ebay plus program in Australia. The literature states: With rates as low as $5.74** for pick, pack and delivery, cross-town (same city) service and $6.83** for interstate service, you have access to the best prices to fulfil your eBay orders in Australia!

I'm not sure how that price relates to US dollars.
