I just received an email from one of my long time suppliers.
(quote)Due to proposed government tariff increases that are beyond our control, we will be implementing a 10-12% price increase.(end quote)
Now notice: because of a PROPOSED tariff (which may or may not happen, and may or may not be the amount that is expected) they WILL raise their prices.
Strikes me that they should wait until they are certain of the amount, if any, before arbitrarily stating a semi-specific increase.
Expect more to come.

Who on earth could have possibly seen this coming? (sarcasm)

At least they'll be no wars soon.

They didn't specify the country but they are an American distributor selling products mostly made in China.

No, I don't think so. The past in prologue and there were no new wars during his first term.

Actually it will only kill those heavily invested in foreign suppliers.
This becomes the new business model (for me at least). There are many products I sell which are made by some companies overseas, and by other companies here in the US. I buy the foreign products to give me a lower starting entry level price and the US products because more and more I see some buyers making it a point to buy American. Even to the extent that I get enails asking me specifically where something was made. (We all know not everyone reads the item specifics).
So, with the new tariffs raising the international manufacturer’s prices that “lead in” gap disappears. In which case there is no longer any point in buying them and in time my products will be dominated by U S manufactures whose prices will most likely remain stable.
And, theoretically at least, that should put the squeeze on the Chinese direct sellers on eBay which may improve the lot of those currently being undercut by those same.
And wasn’t that his whole idea?
Adapt or die.

It's a shame they would not wait but that is business.
Geez. This current administration can't catch a break. Good thing change is coming.

Seems like a lot of conditional weasel-wording by them over a non-specific tariff that hasn't happened yet. I mean, you'd think they could at least state clearly what their own percentage increase is going to be, if they are so confident of the rest of it happening.
My take on it is that they're sending that message now, way ahead of time, precisely to trigger the kind of debate they're hoping for on this side of the ocean, in the hopes that the tariff(s) will not occur, or at least will not be too steep to affect their business in this country.
If they're actually looking for a response from you, I would simply tell them that you plan to continue business with them unless or until the prices become more than you can support. You're not the government.

Kinda' like those folks that keep parading around with a sign that proclaim "The End Is Near" - personally saw them since 1962- the year I bought my 51 Ford for $150.

It will be interesting to see how all this shakes out but you can bet China is already working on ways around the tariffs just like the Russian Federation has managed to work around the sanctions. As I always say there are always trade offs.

Remember when dropshipping resellers' products are shipped to their customers from "overseas", the customers have a personal duty-free allowance of $800 per transaction.
So if your supplier ships directly to your customers and you sell products under $800 you will be fine.
If your supplier warehouses in the USA, those goods will have the tariff applied on entry. And your supplier will be charging you the additional cost of the tariff.

'Boy Wonder' makes cars in China as well as in the USA...so wonder what will happen.
And there's Temu and Shein....people buy items on Temu & Shein and re-sell items at a higher price here...LOL.
And Tik Tok which started selling items...plus the " T Family' used it for a platform running for President....and now no 'T Family' is on Tik Tok so that will probably get knocked off in January.
