Apparently it was surprise-launched on eBay Australia. Beta test before they push it out worldwide?
A lot of sellers are going to be very unhappy.

I have to think it is a money grab. that change will catch how many thousands of sellers who run over their allotment of listings and do not end them at some point as to avoid extra listing fees? isn't it true that when a gtc listing renews it subtracts one from your current allotment? I carry 3000 listings and sell similar, relist, or add totally fresh new listings daily in some combination. I always have 500-1000 sitting in unsolds waiting to relist. I am not going to be to pleased if I have to try and waste more time on here than I already do on a daily basis dealing with glitches and jumping through hoops galore AND having to END 50 to 100 items a day manually to not get caught having thousands of listings continually renewing. I WANT SOME SAY IN MY OWN LISTINGS AND HOW AND WHEN AND FOR WHAT DURATION THEY RUN!

I agree it would make more sense to keep the 30 day option. This is going to create an awful lot of work for an awful lot of sellers.
Utterly off topic, but I love your stuff! And what a great variety of this and that!

It should be noted that sellers using "personal accounts" vs "business accounts" DO NOT pay relisting fees on GTC listings (in Australia).
Not 100% sure but it looks like a Business Account is needed to have a Store.
Into your life it will creep

You know.... I wonder if EBay might also want to encourage more auction listings?

Not good at all. This will destroy the visibility of sellers products, and will likely cause sellers to list 10X more to make up for that lack of visibility, clogging up categories in the process with junk products.
Less traffic also means less sales, and a dysfunctional ebay as a result. If sellers can't continue to earn a living here, of course they will leave.
I'm assuming given they're forcing this on Australia's sellers that its more than likely U.S sellers are going to get hit with this nonsense soon as well.
At this point I'm thinking its a safer bet to open an e-commerce store of my own (much cheaper), where I have more control of my business, and a lot less fees to pay. I really liked selling on ebay, but I think its obvious at this point that this platform is a sinking ship. I just have no faith this platform will last with changes like this.
And contrary to others statements here, burying items in search results doesn't get those items sold, and simply hides listings from potential buyers, obviously a really stupid thing to do.
For those who state they're tired of seeing the same listings over and over again, that's something ebay should fix, but has nothing to do with the listing duration of an item. Just because you saw something last week doesn't mean the rest of the world did too.

I really can't for the life of me see why they would want to encourage the use of more auctions, the auction format is completely dead in the water at least for me. my auction sales have been on a very steep decline 3 years running now and getting worse by the month. Aside from auctions only getting single digit views over a 10 day span with no bids, 3 of the last 4 auctions I had bids on went UNPAID! I have 2 more now waiting to be paid and cases going to be opened in another 24 hrs. I get 1000 fixed price and 500 auctions with my Premium store, I would prefer to get all 1500 and be able to use them anyway I want, the 500 are becoming a big waste. and THANK YOU for your comment about my merchandise in the other thread that was very kind.

Here is one thing people might be forgetting.
The GTC option is good for 30 days.
I hope I have the following dates right as I did it on the fly.
I do not have a store, so I only get 50 items a month. Whichever ones I post on the first day of July will get "renewed" on the July 31. So those items will be taken off my listing allotment or if I have none left, I end up paying 35 cents per listing.
Then the items I had posted on the second day of July will then end on the first day of August will then get "renewed" on August 31st.
Yes, I do realize that not all months have 31 days, but in a way that could make it even harder to keep track of which items will end up costing you listings or money as items you had listed on January 30th will renew on March first and then again on March 31st.
So now instead of listing 50 items, I will end up listing less items so as to save some for the "renewals"

Now as to the shorter duration of 7 and 10 days.
I do not really care for auctions and prefer my items as BIN.
If I am going on vacation, in the past I have listed my items as BIN, 7 or 10 day, so as to have them end before I go on my vacation. So my only options in this case will be either auctions - UGH - or to not put any up.

Or just use whatever duration is available for fixed price listings, and end them when you leave for vacation.

That would be my guess too.
It's not a secret that extra fees (non-fvf) are a major part of current management's plan to grow revenue. All it takes is a portion of those shorter duration listings getting GTC relisted for a fee rather than expire and they'll have discovered found money.
That's the problem for any business when top line sales growth isn't happening and the focus becomes milking the current customer base for more and more money. Never works long term.

I would normally respond by saying I would not want to have to do that extra work, but then again, I would have to end them in order to put up new items.

sit back and try and wrap your head around HOW MUCH money, can't even fathom how much could be made from this ploy. how many sellers on this site? How many active listings every day? My guess is the boat loads of money would be approaching the 10% take on all shipping prices sold daily or MORE because how many listings go unsold on a daily basis. I am sure some math whiz could come up with some base level formula and try and come up with a ball park figure. It may and will drive even more sellers away when they see their bills if this is ever implemented here.

The CEO of Ebay has constantly stated that China is Ebays future and the recent changes in management play right into this plan that he has. Now if they were to change the listings to only GTC, that once again will play right into the Chinese sellers hands because they have no problem with this type of listing due to what they sell and I am sure they have much different costs for listings than we do under their contract with Ebay or they could not afford to list items for 99 cents with free shipping.
So once again US Sellers would wind up supporting the Chinese sellers whose listings would now always be shown indefinitely at a much lower cost i am sure while we struggle spending time trying to manage our listings, especially those that are in the Collectibles and Antiques categories. To me this appears like another strategy to eliminate small sellers or even larger sellers who sell in these categories as many, myself included, rotate our stock and would now have to go in and cancel all the listings at 30 days in order to do that. Hopefully that beta test will flop in Australia or Ebay will be taking another hit on their growth very quickly when more sellers jump ship for the other sites, regardless of their issues as Ebay has been shown recently to have the same billing issues, except they remove those posts from the boards trying to stop it from going viral.
I guess we will see soon enough when the next Sellers Update comes out as to how Ebay is going to squeeze more revenue from their current sellers without increasing sales or traffic.

A vicious circle - Lose sellers - Raise fees - Lose more sellers - Raise fees
