All fixed-price listing durations except for GTC going away?

Apparently it was surprise-launched on eBay Australia. Beta test before they push it out worldwide?

A lot of sellers are going to be very unhappy.

All fixed-price listing durations except for GTC going away?

Here is one thing people might be forgetting.

The GTC option is good for 30 days.

I hope I have the following dates right as I did it on the fly.

I do not have a store, so  I only get 50 items a month. Whichever ones I post on the first day of July will get "renewed" on the July 31.  So those items will be taken off my listing allotment or if I have none left, I end up paying 35 cents per listing.

Then the items I had posted on the second day of July will then end on the first day of August will then get "renewed" on August 31st.

Yes, I do realize that not all months have 31 days, but in a way that could make it even harder to keep track of which items will end up costing you listings or money as items you had listed on January 30th will renew on March first and then again on March 31st.

So now instead of listing 50 items, I will end up listing less items so as to save some for the "renewals"

Non-problem.

List on the 5th day of the month instead of the 1st.

Somewhere in the future that "30 day same month" may pop up again, but not often enough for concern.

General reply:

I'd have to go back and search for it but hasn't there been discussion here, and supported by ebay, about ebay tracking long tail listings?  And bad things, perpetrated by ebay, happening to those listings?

Not too long ago trinton said something in a looooong thread about a catalog issue that all listings should be GTC.

I'll look all this up...soon.

Another thread has been started where the OP has said he went to list using Advanced listing and his only option was GTC.

For those who state they're tired of seeing the same listings over and over again, that's something ebay should fix, but has nothing to do with the listing duration of an item.

It does, though.  Fixed Price items that are repeatedly listed for 7 or 10 days pop up in a "Newly Listed" search about once a week, and sellers use that fact to get an artificial boost in search results.  The way to fix it is to get rid of those listing durations and have all Fixed Price listings be for 30 days.  That way, everyone's items will get the search boost from coming up as "Newly Listed" once a month and it won't annoy buyers who search a category on a regular basis.

And I venture to say most of those type of buyers are also sellers.

I'm a seller myself and I'm all in favor of getting rid of those shorter listing durations.  It makes it a far more level playing field for sellers if everyone's listings get that "Newly Listed" and "Ending Soonest" search boosts the same number of times per month-- your listings aren't going to be shoved down in those search categories by someone who relists their items once a week just to get that boost.

It's more fair to sellers and it doesn't annoy buyers-- it's a win-win situation for both sides.

Fine then that can be achieved by making the only durations available either 30 days or GTC.

You'll still see the first page filled with almost identical listings where the only difference is the seller name.

And I'd be fine with that.

I could learn to live with 30 and  GTC  both being available also but I just thought of another thing about GTC.

I would most likely cancel most of the GTCs between 2-24 hours end time to avoid my remaining listings ( if any were left) from being used up or the 35 cent fee, as I would not necessarily want those particular items listed again. I like to "rotate" my stock.

Think about it. How many objects sell when they only have hours, perhaps even minutes left. So then, neither eBay nor I would benefit.

One of the advantages of a listing ending after 30 days and not GTC is in the fact that I tweak some of them - better description, brighten the picture, lowering the price (when up too long).

A disadvantage of GTC - when people feel that the item will always be there, they can end up putting the purchase off until a later time - and maybe then forgetting about it.

I'm assuming given they're forcing this on Australia's sellers that its more than likely U.S sellers are going to get hit with this nonsense soon as well.

In 2008,  Ebay tried to force Australia to Paypal only.  Australians refused and many Australian sellers just walked away.  The Australian government finally told ebay that they could not do that several years later.

I bought a lot from several Australian sellers at the time and heard this right from them.

sit back and try and wrap your head around HOW MUCH money, can't even fathom how much could be made from this ploy. how many sellers on this site? How many active listings every day? My guess is the boat loads of money would be approaching the 10% take on all shipping prices sold daily or MORE because how many listings go unsold on  a daily basis. I am sure some math whiz could come up with some base level formula and try and come up with a  ball park figure. It may and will drive even more sellers away when they see their bills if this is ever implemented here.

A vicious circle - Lose sellers - Raise fees - Lose more sellers - Raise fees

Less sellers~less buyers~less items to be found~less sales~ad infinitum.

If your listing has been active on the site for more than a year without sales, then we may remove it. Review the email you received from us. It contains information about the listings that were removed and next steps.
