Advertising Banners throughout Site? Are you tell me the 10% you make off each sales isn't enough?

I just noticed today, I am sure they have been there awhile?  But seriously?  You take 10% of everyone's sales, and yet you still feel like that isn't enough freaking money, so you are selling advertising as well?   **bleep**?

Are you new to eBay?

eBay has hosted third part advertising its the site for almost two decades now.

eBay is a publicly traded company. Their primary obligation is to make as much money as possible for their stockholders. In capitalism, there is never "enough" money.

I use Adblock Plus and have never seen an advertising banner on this site. It's blocking seven ads on this page right now.

I can't imagine not using an ad blocker app on the internet. It's like using Facebook without having F.B. Purity or Social Fixer apps installed.

Maybe you should reflect on that thinking a little. Do you have a profit level in mind for you, me, or eBay? Silly!!!!

The part that is so stupid is that for what it costs them to run these they're really not cashing in on ad banners.

Most of these geniuses in charge of these things were never true webmasters, I should say they don't have skin in the game in the sense of having to pay the bills with that revenue or they would know better...

Back during the dotcom bubble it was found those banners ran some of the lowest ROI's...

And when I say low I mean they were talking less than a dollar for one hundred thousand impressions...

I am sure the same genius is now thinking "Oh so I have to run a MILLION!"

NO!

But anyway...

It's never a good idea to "sell" your traffic to a third party who, if the tracking doesn't work as it's supposed to (and it often doesn't) won't pay a dime to ebay ... Thus all ebay is doing is spamming off their visitors, literally.

And the tip of the iceberg?

To run those ads ebay becomes an affiliate site...

That's basically placing themselves in the position of underdog.

Not a good place to be for a giant domain.

You want to increase visitor retention?

Don't run affiliate ads.

Definitely don't run banners.

I'm seeing ads for Crocs and Spotify.  Seems appropriate as they're in a similar boat as Ebay I believe. 😉

Of course not. Greed knows no bounds.

I agree with everything you have said and the other poster info about using the AdBlock. But what I want to see is ebay moves "other seller" items from the top of your listing down to the bottom where it belongs. It used to be there a while ago, but now you click on an active listing you are interested in, but you have to scroll down through almost 2 full bars of other items that many times don't even come close to what you are interested in (or as a seller) offering.

I ain't got the brains to make this up (Fantastic Beasts)

eBay is one of the top 50 traffic sites in the country, and I suspect that gave them the leverage to negotiate a third party advertising agreement that is a little better than most of the "true webmasters"  out there.

Sort of like how Toys R Us got a much better deal as a seller here than most of the "true sellers" did 🙂

eBay revenue for marketing services on the marketplace in Q4 2018 was $316 million, which was  16% of all marketing revenue.

Lets just say that I agree with you...

But take it from a visitors or even a buyer's standpoint, what do you really think that does?

Do you think it helps keep them here?

That has been a long time complaint of mine, for all the advances in their so-called "targeted" advertising it still is far from perfect... I get what you're saying, and other times even when the product is related... Just for example I may be searching for a car part and these sponsored listings show up and one of those looks to be exact what I need so I click on it, only to find out it's for a different year make and model (something which if I hadn't been paying careful attention I may not have noticed)...

Therefore a lot of those listings are in fact responsible for increased returns, I am guessing the powers that be don't care since it's ultimately the seller who takes the blame?  However again I ask, what does this do for the buyer, does anyone think it is helping keep the buyer "happy," is it helping them have that positive experience ebay's so concerned about?

Now offense but when Ebay is in spot 42 and pornhub is in spot 27 - that says a lot! Top 10 - google, youtube, facebook, Amazon.

Perhaps, but I'm not sure what that has to do with the discussion about eBay's banner advertising.
