Hello! Newbie here...I accepted an offer on an item. I saw pending payment overnight and in the morning, then suddenly the item was back to active. What could have happened? I didn't realize the buyer is able to cancel the order once offer was accepted. Just curious. Thank you for your help.

Did the buyer account get nuked before the payment went through? If you go to your buyers feedback page does it say 'Not a registered user' next to his ID?

The offer will say pending and the listing remain active until it is actually paid.

If you paid, he probably has two of the item. I do this with heavy dishes that tend to break themselves if I try to ship too many. So I relist when a small batch sells.

I think the OP is the seller here.

Until the item is paid for, it stays active, unless you have it set for immediate payment on offers.

.I accepted an offer on an item.

Was it that you accepted a "counter offer" from your buyer for an offer you sent out? Otherwise for buyer generated offers, your settings are such that your buyer would have been auto-billed (immediately charged) for the sale upon you selecting the accept button.

Thank you so much everyone! So helpful...!!! Yes I accepted a 'counter offer.' I forgot that. I also found that although the listing does not show in my "awaiting payment list," when I tried to edit the listing I was restricted. Then I found somewhere in managing offers -- the listing still says "awaiting payment." I'll just sit tight for now. You all are amazing to take the time to help me. THANK YOU!

It seems like ebay is still "tinkering" with this offer process. There was a time when you accepted an offer from a buyer, eBay changed the name to "You sent an offer" even if you did no such thing. The buyer was never notified that you accepted their offer, and figured you just ignored them.
After a while it was determined that the BUYER was sent an offer from you with one of two screens regarding that offer. One had the choice to accept or decline, the other screen had the choice to pay up or decline. There was no mechanism to determine which of those that EBAY sent the buyer unless they shared it with you. Since they could always decline or ignore, it really didn't do anything for the non-paying buyer problem anyway.
It could be that your buyer does not even know you accepted the offer. Without the buyer taking a screen shot of the message/screen they received you won't be able to know if this is the problem either. I could only guess that the buyer did not know you accepted, got the screen (if they even know where to look) where 'immediate payment' was required in order to close the deal.
In the past, if a counter offer was accepted, they reverted to normal listings without the pre-payment requirement that you use. A buyer could 'accept' many this way and actually combine multiple items for one invoice/shipping amount from the same seller even if your settings basically prohibit that. eBay is trying to get rid of this procedure since they make more money when combined shipping is disallowed.
If you can message the buyer you may want to tell them that you have indeed accepted their offer. It could also be that they already found the offer from you (instead of an acceptance notice), changed their mind and declined, or eBay put a time limit on the offer which has expired.
Until we get some screen shots from buyers in this situation, all we can do is guess.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. I will reach out the the buyer.

Yes, it seemed the buyer was not aware that I accepted the offer -- so it was in limbo. But as soon as I contacted her she paid right away...THANK YOU ALL for your advice. Problem solved!
