Absent customers

Why do so many ebay shoppers not check their messages? I try to stay in contact from beginning to end of a sale. Recently I sold some books that were shipped by media mail. I was following the shipment and the box took a wrong turn and ended up on the other side of the country. I contacted the post office and we got it back on track. I left a hello, your item will be shipped tomorrow message, and then a couple regarding where the package was and when it will be delivered. I haven't received one response. It has been many years since I was a buyer only, is it not clear on the page that you have a message? We see them as sellers, but I wonder if the average buyer would notice.  Maybe it's just me, I like to communicate. Thoughts?

Re: Absent customers

Speaking as both a buyer and a seller I prefer to have NO communication.

Thank you for your reply. My original message was more regarding the interface itself.  Do buyers know that just that little bell being lit means they have a message? So many people do not use or check email accounts these days, but when you log into Ebay, is the only way you know you have a message that little icon?

Buyers are notified of emails, just as sellers are.  I personally never use the bell.  I have all my emails drop into program on my desktop.

That is how the vast majority of transactions on Ebay are processed.  Outside of auto emails from Ebay notifying a buyer of the purchase and of the shipping with the tracking number.  Ebay has told us this for many years.

Re: Absent customers

I regret and apologize for posting this. I never expected to see that so many just don't want to be bothered.  Very sad

Re: Absent customers

Good customer service is delivering an item quickly (or as expected for economy shipping methods) and in expected or better condition. Expecting anything but payment from a customer is not good customer service.

No, deal with the post office, sure. That can be important. Notify your customer of delays, resolutions, etc. Sure-- but only once if possible. Expect a response? No way.

Re: Absent customers

There's no need to apologize,  your post is fine. Posters are telling you, from a buyer's perspective,  that "Update" emails are unnecessary. Ebay sends me the tracking and if I'm curious I'll click on it to see where my package is.

Thank you for your reply. According to the post office, it never should have gone the route it did and had I not checked on it, who knows where it would have gone.

It probably would have been delivered just fine.  I had a package take a detour to Hawaii once... it ended up being delivered without any need for intervention on my end.

It's not uncommon for packages to get tossed into the wrong bin by mistake.  It will be sorted out at the next sort facility and they will be put back on track.
