A buyer is requesting a return for an eBay order through PayPal after a month

I am an eBay seller and I sold a $2000 Canon camera (5D Mark IV) on 07/28/2019 and it was delivered on 08/02/2019. On 08/30/2019, a dispute case was opened on PayPal by the buyer and claiming the item is not described.

PayPal just contacted me and told me they will ask the buyer to ship the item back to me and then they will issue a full refund to the buyer. Is it how it is supposed to work? I mean the item was delivered a month ago and buyer didn't contact me at all or request a return on eBay.  It has been more than a month since the item was delivered, is it still valid for a return?

I don't think the camera had any issues. I tested the camera before shipping so I am confident about that. Even if it had, why the buyer didn't do anything until a month later? It doesn't make any sense. What if the buyer damaged the camera while using it in the past month and is going to return it to me? Anything I can do to protect me as a seller? Can eBay do anything to help me? also eBay charged me $120 (6%) commission fee. Would eBay refund me that since the return is being processed through PayPal, not eBay?

I am so worried right now. Please help me!  Thanks in advance!

Thanks for saying that Tulips. Yea, that's what I am thinking. I would sell inexpensive items if I continue to sell on eBay. It is really frustrating when something like this happen to seller.

How exactly will PayPal take the $2,000 from you to give to the thief?

Because the tracking number shows the item has been returned to my address so they had to refund the buyer based on their policy. They can only look at the tracking info and they don't care about what the mail box really contained since they have no way to know what was shipped by the buyer and received by me. Unfortunately, that's how it works.

But how did they take the money from you?

Sorry no, this is a PayPal case, so any FVF you were billed/already paid will not be credited, hence that $120 is gone.

And because you didn't take action and dawdled until this dispute was escalated to a PayPal claim, @huqingfeng2001, you lose PayPal fees, and will pay PayPal the full $2015 out of pocket -- not $2015 less your PayPal fees -- so that $60 as well is gone. gwgw

The OP was obviously just scammed by a thief. Certainly there is justice out there waiting . Tulips

If they refund the buyer, they can call Ebay and get the FVF credited.  Ebay can see the PP refund.

They can just do that. It's their transaction platform and they can do whatever they want on it. It is showing -$2,015 on my PayPal balance and I have to add money to resolve the negative amount.

As previously explained, PayPal keeps their PayPal fees originally charged to the seller when PayPal returns the buyer's payment to the buyer.

OP originally got $1956 from the $2015 payment after paying PayPal fees.

Now OP owes the full $2015 after PayPal has refunded the buyer.

That's because PayPal keeps the ~$60 PayPal fees.

Hopefully, this is now clear to all all of us who were misled by the misinformation in this thread:

If the seller refunds the buyer, the seller gets PayPal fees back*

If PayPal refunds the buyer, PayPal keeps their PayPal fees

*until payments beginning Oct 11, 2019

You're assumptions are incorrect. As a 15 year seller on eBay I have always gotten my FVF's refunded.

Never sell anything on eBay (or anywhere on-line for that matter ) that you are not willing to give away.
Them's the facts.

I just had this happen with a new and tested lighted mirror I sold on August 8. First the buyer tried to open a case here after 5 weeks, saying item wasn't as described. They said i it sat in the closet and they just got it out. I offered them a return if they paid the return shipping label. Instead they opened a case in Paypal without even answering me.  I declined their case here. Paypal allowed them to return it. I received the item yesterday. No original packaging, broke and used. I contacted paypal and they allowed me to dispute it after refunding the fradulent buyer. I sent them pictures of what was sent back to me yesterday. I received a refund today from paypal. Follow the steps, if it is a fradulent claim you should be able to get your money back.

You saw in post #36 that OP owes the whole $2015 and already didn't get their PayPal fees back.

And now, even though the buyer was fully refunded, @huqingfeng2001 can you tell us the 2 or 3 reasons eBay told you why you don't qualify for your $121 in  FVF's refunded?

I don't think that's a fact.  I'm not willing to give away anything that I am selling on Ebay.

If a buyer attempts a scam, I will present my evidence of the scam to Ebay/Paypal.  If they choose to provide the scammer a refund, despite the evidence I have provided, that is their poor decision not mine.

You do have recourse when a company like Paypal removes funds from your account and gives it to a criminal (and you have given them evidence that it is a scam).  You just have to be motivated to take action. The important thing is to start collecting evidence of the scam and document your correspondence with Paypal notifying them of the evidence.    Basically start preparing for litigation/arbitration.

A $5 theft might not motivate me to spend hours on recovery.... a >$2000 theft certainly would.

After submitting the police report and IC3 report , PayPal granted my appeal and refunded the total amount $2,015. I am satisfied with the result. Thanks for everyone's help. I really appreciate it!

Congratulations, @huqingfeng2001! You went the distance, slogged through all the reports, and PayPal paid your appeal. Can you tell us, for future reference:

- The total PayPal payment was: $2015

- After $59 fees, you received: $1956

- PayPal refunded the buyer: $2015

- You were negative-balanced: $2015

- Zeroed the balance paying: $2015

- PayPal courtesy refunded: $2015

Is that what happened, or are any events missing, wrong, or extra? Very happy for you -- THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY.

Yea, that's pretty much everything happened. I am not a native English speaker so the appealing process was not easy for me. I am glad I was able to get my money back 🙂
