You'll get no argument from me.  ALL costs are passed onto the consumer, always. Doesn't matter what the costs ends up being, I think most reasonable people understand that.

Since I buy the rice quite regularly and noticed the price jump (and lack of Canadian flag on the price tag, something they're doing to identify anything made in Canada not subject to tariffs), I thought it was a good example to help make your point. Price changes of things might not be so noticeable on things we don't buy all the time, but as a person who feels the need to eat the same stuff all the time I notice when prices change. None of the Canadian made (or non-US stuff, like the Asian frozen dinners I buy) has changed in price significantly, but the rice I noticed. Probably the only US food item I regularly buy.

Long grain and wild rice?
IF ONLY that seasoning blend could be bought wholesale, I would make it in bigger batches with wholesale long grain and wild rice (by the way, have you ever cooked wild rice all by iteslf?  it smells like chocolate brownies baking!).  I would also try that spice on other things, the sky's the limit, it is sooooo GOOOOOOD!!!

One of my earliest memories was being home from school with tonsilitis, lying on my bean bag on the floor, watching The Waltons with my mom, and she made me some of that wonderful Uncle Ben's.  She cleverly used extra butter for this occasion, to grease the rice's passage down my poor miserable gullet.  A little slice of Heaven, that day.

"No, I don't agree with anything you've said. Let's be clear about that.  I absolutely do not agree.  A tariff is a duty, which is a sort of a "tax" levied on the OTHER guy, not you. I'm getting very tired of all of this nonsense about higher taxes for Americans because that is precisely the opposite of what a tariff is...."

When the US Government puts a 25% tariff on Canadian aluminum and steel, it's the importing American company that pays the tariff not Canada.

The American company then passes on the cost to local businesses and ultimately the consumer.

So if your local bakery shop is charged more for the aluminum pie plates they need, the bakery shop will pass those costs onto the consumer.  Tariffs mean higher costs for consumers in the importing country.

I have some difficulty preparing meals so I tend to buy a lot of "ready to eat" stuff like frozen dinners and packaged foods. I also really like my cooking a lot when I get around to doing it and tend to overeat... (kind of was a problem during COVID, I had no real hobbies so cooking and eating became a pass time).

Yes, and I don't know why this simple concept is so hard to get across. It's basically a regressive tax on consumers - importers are not going to absorb it out of the goodness of their hearts, it's going to get passed on in price increases due to simple costs. The scheme failed in 1828 and 1930 (the infamous Smoot-Hawley debacle with subsequent collapse) - so I guess the requisite 100 years has passed so everyone who remembers the last failure of a tariff system is dead and people think somehow that this is going to make us all rich in 2025?

I think there are better ways to bring manufacturing back to the US than faux protectionist claptrap.

They do because 1). They dislike the opposing party so much that they are very content with upsetting them.  Something the convicted felon does on a daily basis.  2).  They enjoy the "freedom" to be allowed to express themselves exactly how he does.

Please...I crack up every time I see you post that line.

Consider yourself lucky you never made a deal with him. I'm sure many of his sub-contractors that he never paid regret ever dealing with him.

And how he and Vance made the biggest fools out of themselves on tv with Zelensky, Rubio's face said it all.

Exactly, after WW2 we became dominant because the US was 50% of the global GDP, now we are only 26%.

As Trump would say, we don't have the cards.

When the global economy continues around us, we will come out of this much weaker. All this pain was self-inflicted and could of easily been avoided.

Back when Reagan disagreed with Japan on trade agreements and unfair trade practices he handled it professionally through negotiations. There was no need to implode the whole economy because of China this time either, but that's the result of electing a reality TV star.

Exactly.  One thing I'm seeing over and over in these threads (and the media tbh) is a very basic, fundamental misunderstanding of what a tariff is and how it works.  Tariffs are not taxes.

Reminds me of how your ilk try to claim the US is not a democracy too. 🤣

Re: 90 Day Pause on Tariffs....

Trade adviser Peter Navarro said Trump's tariff situation "unfolded exactly the way it should".

Which part was that? The bit where some billionaires in the know make more billions on the share market. Was that the real point of the "tariffs".

One minute he is saying there will be no negotiating, the next he is talking about negotiating. One minute (yesterday) he is saying there will be no delays when  flat out asked that question, the next he's announcing a 90 day delay.  What a great leader.

It's White House sycophants spewing that verbal diarrhea. It is not based on actual facts.

@silverdreamfilm

In all fairness, it could be true... not the number 70 necessarily, but the fact that a very large number have in fact contacted the USG to ask to discuss the matter.   Such proposals for negotiations are quite common... that is why the USG will often leak to the media what it is "thinking of doing" vis-a-vis another country with which there is a bilateral issue.

Nonetheless, we now know that the free fall in the stock market -- not to mention Jamie Dimon's unambiguous public declaration that the US was now in for a recession -- are what alarmed Mr. Trump's most senior advisors and led him to reverse, or significantly alter, course.
