" The tariffs are paid by the US citizens.  "

So long as you insist on other countries doing our manufacturing then this is true.

Only if you are buying from other countries,  then this is true.

Our trade imbalance is not sustainable, its been kicked down the road for years.  I bet we could graph rentier income increasing proportionately to the trade imbalance increasing.

Income taxes are directly stolen from each citizen.  No one seems upset about that.  people seem very upset the income tax may be eliminated through elimination of fraud and collection of tariffs.   In fact, that seems to be the only permitted discussion, be very upset.   I don't care in any way if Amazon won't carry an imported brand of lawn furniture this season.

Your comment is not relevant.

Worse yet, it ignores the indispensable necessity for there to be three co-equal branches of government.

There’s a reason that the Congress controls the government pursestrings.

The outcry in Congress over Mr. Trump’s tariffs without question has put enormous pressure on the White House.

That’s because every constituency  of every member of Congress will be negatively impacted by these tariffs.

The President of the United States needs the Congress, and vice versa. It’s a symbiotic relationship. Which is why any attempt by Mr. Trump to aggregate too much executive power will be met with great resistance.

And in this case, he was forced to cut a deal.

Anti-China sentiment in Congress is quite high, so Mr. Trump still has time to play games with Beijing. Although in the final analysis, I suspect that he will be forced to capitulate there as well in some fashion.

That’s because the days when the US could wage unilateral economic warfare on the rest of the world, without paying any cost, have been over for quite a long time.

Mr. Trump has no idea what the average American perceives or thinks. If he did, he would’ve taken a much more deliberate approach to this whole notion of tariffs.

How about skepticism? Is that allowed?

Re: 90 Day Pause on Tariffs....

We need to wait & see if it's true.

@meme6253

No you don't.   You need to find out before the US media declares it "just a mistake".  LOL.   I find the BBC reports rather reliable, and there is nothing preventing you from "fact checking".   P.S. those Islands that have just penguins are good to go.  US citizens are safe from tariffs from those areas because penguins do not export anything to the US anyway.

Nobody is making the white house phone ring off the hook to "renegotiate" anything.  The world is making plans to NOT NEED the US at all.  The US does not manufacture much anymore, and if the idea is to "bring manufacturing back" there are likely not too many workers who would be willing to work 10 hour days for $400 a month to assemble shirts or toasters.

Re: 90 Day Pause on Tariffs....

Exactly.  One thing I'm seeing over and over in these threads (and the media tbh) is a very basic, fundamental misunderstanding of what a tariff is and how it works.  Tariffs are not taxes.  They are fees levied against a trading partner, imposed to deter a nation from buying another nation's goods.

A recent example I heard regarding the sale of Ford Mustangs in Britain illustrate this point beautifully.  The UK imposes a 100% tariff (I'm not sure this is the correct amount, just repeating the example here) on this vehicle as an import from the US.  So, we sell that 30K vehicle to the Brits, but they then charge their people 60K.   What this does is make our goods cost prohibitive.  Why would anyone spend 60K on a 30K car after all??

By contrast, when you or I buy say a Burberry scarf, we will pay roughly the same amount (I believe there may be a 10% tariff that we might impose on these items, at most) whether we buy it at a boutique in Manhattan or downtown London.  The U.S.  has actively encouraged trade and growth of other nations by allowing this lop-sided system to continue...all the while destroying our own economic base.

More importantly, China in particular, has made it their mission to not only sell us garbage but to steal everything they can from us while doing so (they do not care about intellectual property, copyright, or patents).  We lap it up because the tariffs on their goods have been so low that we simply cannot resist the great "deals" they give us on shlock cites like Temu and Amazon.  They cash in on our greed, sloth, and laziness while feeding us gifts like the corona virus and fentanyl.

ETA:  I don't actually buy Burberry.  I think it's an overpriced nothing burger of a brand. 😊

@chapeau-noir

LOL!  I did think of them first thing... The penguins were never going to suffer.  It never ceases to amaze me that so many people still do not realize that the tariffs are at the expense of those who are in need of, and importing goods. The tariffs are paid by the US citizens.  Nobody, for example, was importing goods from the 'penguin' countries anyway. It was just one of those things like saying "Italy was an ally of the United States since the time of ancient Rome."  US citizens can likely count on their 'auto insurance' becoming more expensive since the "parts to fix their cars" are going to cost $125% more.  The "red hats" fabricated and imported from China will increase as well.

Re: 90 Day Pause on Tariffs....

This too shall pass, once Trump and Musk and all those other monsters buy the drop (that's where the market uptick is coming from) and get richer. This tariff stuff was just a quick wealth grab, which is all Trump's ever been good at, until the blowback comes of course. All Trump was ever going to do was terrify virtue-signaling liberals and lower tax rates for rich people, same as his last term.

Penguins?
Are you saying that I can't ship my inventory from Shanghai to Penguin Land, change the location on my stuff to "made in penguin land" and avoid tariffs?

"There was no pause.  That was fake.

Where do you get your 'news'?  "

There was a "fake"/rumored pause yesterday (or the day before-can't remember) but there is a real one today.

You are correct.

Except for China, they don't get a pause, they get a increase.
