80 Character titles.....is this a joke, or what?

eBay says that titles can be up to 80 characters long, yet when I attempt to put in longer titles, I'm restricted to around 68. Does anyone have any thoughts on that or is it now just the policy. It's very aggravating when I want to get a detailed description out there to find that I don't, it seems, have that option.

Can you give an example of a rejected title? I've never been forced to use less than 80 title characters.

Description is a separate field with a much larger character limit. But if you meant 'descriptive title' and not 'description' then you can ignore this part of my post.

I've never had it give me less than 80. Counting, of course, spaces, punctuation, acronyms, etc. Hmmm... 🤔

Spaces are counted as characters. If you have 12 spaces in your title, and 68 visible characters, this amounts to a total of 80.

Bizarre, I get 80 characters which I tend to use all of as well. I've never been restricted to less, ever....

Over all the years during which eBay has permitted sellers to use 80 characters in the item titles, I have never encountered being limited to less than 80.

You are aware that each blank space in a title is counted as a character, right?

OP got 78 characters in this listing title:

Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Wilderness Survival Guide 35" x 23" Poster

And 78 in this listing title:

Lot of Three US Political Campaign Coins Jackson, Harrison and Hancock 19th c.

Also got 78 in this one - could have saved some space by eliminating commas and apostrophes:

Invicta Men's, White Dial, Gold Case, Leather Band Chronograph Watch 14330 NWOT

No. A joke would be if they restricted you to 69.

I checked 2 of your 3 listing posted today.  2 of them had 80 characters in the title. The third one had 68 characters but when I clicked on ‘sell one now’ I was able add more letters.

Your most recent listing...

Welt der Kunst~HANS MEMLING~Prin1977Hardcover German~Religion Art Paintings~RARE

This Title has more than 68 characters!

FYI - Those "~" are probably messing up your search results.
