2024 Summer Olympics tickets not allowed on eBay?

Does anyone know what is the rationale for this policy? Is it due to the Games currently being outside eBay's 40-day pre-sale window to ensure successful delivery, or is this a permanent restriction that will continue up to & through the Games? Did eBay enter into an agreement with the IOC / French government / Paris Organizing Committee to enforce this policy?

Reselling Olympics tickets is "officially" against their terms of sale, but this has been the case at every Olympics.  I remember tickets for China (2008) & the UK (2012) were being listed all over eBay despite both countries purportedly cracking down on reselling:

The London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act makes it a criminal offence, punishable by fines of up to £20,000, to sell London 2012 tickets on the black market.

And from a buyer's perspective, even though there is an official IOC-approved resale platform for 2024 tickets, many of the most in-demand events (women's gymnastics final, men's basketball final, etc.) have been unavailable for weeks, as no sellers have been willing to part with them.

So is the 2024 policy permanent and if so, why? Does anyone have more information? It seems unlikely eBay is willing to voluntarily forfeit such a large source of revenue.

They want to wait as long as they can, hoping people will be desperate enough to pay crazy high prices for them.

It is likely because buyers would not be protected due to the length of time there will be before they can use the tickets.  And in using the tickets is when they are going to likely find out if they are real or not.  

Not to mention they are held in a different country.  So the buyers would be spending a lot of money to get to where the Olympics are being held only to find out they can't get into the games.

That is a huge risk to the buyers with no recourse because of the length of time until the games begin, well at least not on Ebay.  If they pay with a credit card they likely could file a claim with their Credit Card holder, but still, the buyer would be out a lot of money for travel and all the costs associated with that.

Ebay is the only one that can change the policy.  Maybe they will as we grow closer to the actual games beginning, but i wouldn't hold your breath.

The official resale platform is face value only. (FV+10% for buyers and FV-5% for sellers to cover commissions.)

If it's illegal to resell them, it's illegal.........I would think that would be reason........whatever went on before......

If eBay intended to allow sales at a later date, it would usually be noted in the policy ("due to eBay's presale policy, listings for <item> cannot begin until <date>") instead of a blanket ban like right now.

The fact that previous Olympics were held in China, Canada, the UK, Brazil, etc. did not prevent tickets from being sold here. eBay's Money Back Guarantee essentially amounts to "the Customer is always right," so there's not much manpower involved in handling any disputes.

IDK, I have no idea what Ebay's intent is, you'd have to contact them to find out.

Things change over the years.  Some rules on Ebay a couple years ago are not the same today.  That is something we can always count on, things always change around here.

You need to contact Ebay directly with your questions and / or concerns.

Looks like the Olympic committee is / are applying new rules.

For the first time in Olympic history, tickets for the 2024 Paris Olympics are being sold exclusively on a centralized platform, via the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, making it open to all fans worldwide at the same time.

That is likely why Ebay has the policy it has.

I contacted eBay CS before posting this topic, and they had no idea. My eBay agent had to put me on hold for several minutes while she "researched the policy."

eBay is not allowing sales of Olympic tickets because the IOC has forbidden it. That they have sold here before makes no difference. You'd have to question the IOC as to why they have enacted this policy. Those looking for tickets off the IOC portals (i.e., for individual events) will have to use private means.

It would also be a "big headache" to eBay if tickets turned out to be fake after buyers arrived at the Olympics with purchases on eBay from sellers.

"forfeit such a large source of revenue".....I think it is to forfeit the headaches of fake tickets.

2024 Olympic tickets cannot be sold on eBay because the official platform for ticket resale for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is exclusive.
