Good grief. Things are bolder and brighter on the app, but still no combined shipping request option, still no send invoice option, still no fixes to the photo imaging program that alters our photos with no way to stop it from doing so...

Why in the world does ebay focus more on facades than on functionality? In the town hall they made a big deal about their 25 years without explaining why they’re so behind? That’s not something they should be bragging about until they recognize that their “profits” are just moneys they’re NOT investing in the site. But those headers on the app sure are nice and bright! Goodie! Oh. Brother.

Good question.

I think it basically comes down to a situation where they put themselves in a weak position, and now they aren't too sure how to move forward from here.

They invested two years in to taking eBay and doing huge changes to get them to where they are now, and they aren't going to want to abandon that after such an investment.

But I'm definitely of the opinion that they would be better off doing so and starting from scratch on a new plan, than sticking to this direction which has ran eBay in to the ground.

Perhaps the tech people only have sufficient knowledge to keep doing more of what they have been doing & new hires will be required to tackle improving features.

Unfortunately budgetary constraints could possibly negatively impact the adding of new hires.

So let us for now, all begin to fully enjoy the nice & bright, & profusely give eBay our thanks. 😨

Well to be honest, eBay does look pretty dated compared to the competition.

But the problem isn't the theme as much as the interface design.

Instead of looking and feeling like one solid functioning site that has an intuitive interface, it feels like many separate components/sites all thrown together in a pot.

The nested menus are confusing, especially if you're trying to find a certain setting. Account are spread through many different pages.

Even listing pages have different formats. It's extremely jarring to click a link and then have a completely different theme than the last.

I mean, any large software like eBay actually is a bunch of different software combined together. But this should not be visible to the user. It should all feel connected and intelligently designed.

EBay honestly just feels a bit "old" and the jarring theme changes make it feel meshed together and cheap.

This is besides issues such as their data collection not working very well, and their recommendations/etc are not very good compared to the competition.

I think part of the problem is that (apparently) few of eBay's coders and managers have real experience as sellers. You can't understand or prioritize what the improvements should be without that experience.

Unfortunately the reality of ebay is reflective of the larger issue with American values and the tendency of tech to put image and allure over functionality an usability. I dont think it fair to single out ebay when it seems more like the rule than the exception.
