Of templates and design

I'm choosing a replacement for Turbo Lister. When I read reviews of listing tools, I'm struck by the importance that some sellers give to the ability to design their own templates by drag-and-drop, change the templates of listings in bulk, etc. -- things I'd never think of doing, much less attach importance to.

I've seen testimonials by sellers who swear that using the template frambulation feature in XYZ Lister increased their sales 150%. Granted that the vendor is publishing comments that present their product in the best possible light, but why would anyone believe that?

Am I missing something here?

Let me add some background. My day job is technical editing. I understand the importance of typography and graphic design; it's part of what I do for a living. I just don't think it has much importance on eBay.

If a listing exhibits poor grammar and spelling, that affects my perception of the seller, and if I'm shopping, it's likely to affect my decision of whether to buy. Likewise, if a listing uses distracting fonts and too many colors. But if it uses a bare-bones design with one font, type size, and color, and no decorations, that just tells me that the seller is interested in getting to the point, as I am. the seller could create that "design" by default and never change it, and it wouldn't have a bit of influence on what I did or didn't buy from them.

eBay has enough complicated design elements. A simple description is all that is necessary, IMO.

These templates that people wish to use may also complicate the display of the description on mobile devices.

Simple is good.

Dolly, it's nice to have my opinion validated. I hope to read some contrary opinions, though -- even if I don't agree with them, I could learn something!

One other comment on listings: the amount of information in them does affect my buying decisions. If I'm shopping for a book, for example, I may spend more for a new copy rather than take a chance on a used one that may or may not be in satisfactory condition.

I agree with simplicity and good practices, but I have to tell you that over the years I've seen some of the WORST listings sell repeatedly...ones with pages of TOS & screaming multi colored fonts.  Nowadays I'm seeing those with one line or less description( see pictures),&  blurry pictures sell.  In general, neither of those had the lowest price.....  so I'm ambivalent about what difference any of it makes.......lol

So design matters after all, but to be effective it may have to be bad, not good... my head hurts...
