How does one create listings with variations for trading cards?
I read the article at https://export.ebay.com/en/listings/how-optimize-your-listings/how-to-create-listings-with-variation...

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

Congratulations! It looks like you've got it figured out!

Your variation listing counts as a single insertion, so it is an excellent way to list more items using fewer insertions. Of course, each card that sells will have its own final value fees.

Normally, it is understood that the price is for each card, not for all four, but for items with a price that high, I would make each price just a little different, as that simply adds one more clue when they see the price change while clicking through the photos.

And yes, eBay does allow different prices for the different variations, but they do NOT, for example, allow a seller of shoes in various sizes, colors, and prices to also list a set of laces (typically the cheapest item) as a variation option. And would not allow listings for trading cards to include a sleeve as a low cost variation option.

eBay does a really good job with variations in search. Even though the name of your particular card is not in the title, and is not in the item specifics, eBay will pick up the drop list Option name in response to a search for that name.  I assume that may not work as well if the option within the drop list is not known in the card category, or in the category being searched.

One thing buyers don't often know is that if they want more than one item from the list, they should "Add to cart" for a single checkout and combined shipping (if offered) rather than clicking "Buy It Now", although this is more important for cheap cards, where the seller wants to avoid a 30 cent transaction fee on multiple separate tiny purchases.

Some sellers also offer a % discount for multiples. The definable discount rates should be available at the bottom of the listing creation form and will appear in the listing.  It is applied at checkout and can be applied to either multiples of the same item or multiple variations within the same listing.

I see that you don't have a description, just a boilerplate. I would encourage you to include some sentences about the specific cards at the top of the description area.

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

@popch3

I have a tutorial here that I hope will help you understand while it walks you through the process:

http://shipscript.com/ebayhelp/lister_hub/creating_ebay_variations.htm

You won't be able to revise an existing listing to turn it into a variation. You'll need to start a new listing.

To list variations, you will need either the Business Listing form or the New Unified Listing form.

- An "Attribute" is the name of a dropdown list.

- That list is then populated with "Options".

For an Attribute name, you might use "Card#". The Attribute name that you use must be different than the heading name of any Item Specific.  So you can't use "Card number" or "Character".  If Card# doesn't suit your type of trading cards, then make up a name like "Comic Character" or "Batman Character" or "Heroes" or plurals like "Characters", just as long as whatever you choose is not the name of an Item Specific title.

Most card sellers have only one Attribute, usually a list of characters or players, but there are sometimes reasons to have more.

After your create your attribute, you can add Options. Each option would be the name of the card (usually a card #, if there is one, with a character).

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

Thanks for the fast response. You say 'To list variations, you will need either the Business Listing form or the New Unified Listing form.'....so I won't be able to use a pre-existing template that I've already built...even though the 'variations' option is there?
If I can't use my pre-built template, where are the Business Listing form or the New Unified Listing form? Can you supply links?

Thanks!

@popch3

If the "Create variations" button is available to your template, then you can start with that template. At the moment, eBay will not let you revise an existing listing to add variations if it does not already have variations.

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

In my template, when I click 'create variations', it opens a ' Create your variations' page, with 'Attributes' and under that a +Add link, and under that a +Create your own link. When I click on the +Add link, it opens a box with 'add your own attribute' with a empty check box....when I check that box, it opens up another box with 'Enter a unique attribute that helps describe how your items vary', with a empty box to fill in. As I'm doing chase trading cards, what would I enter here?

When I click the +Create your own link, it opens a box to fill in...what goes in here?

Thanks!

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

Only certain categories allow variations. A 'true' variation would be that you have 5, 10, 100 different cards ALL THE SAME PRICE. If they are not, they should not be in a variation type listing.

@popch3

Is this what you see? I'm using the "new unified listing form" to capture these screenshots, although they look almost identical to the variation builder on the "business listing tool".

Unified Lister - Variation - AttributeUnified Lister - Variation - Attribute

At the red arrow, enter the name of your droplist.  You could put "Pick your card" or you could put the name of the set. I don't know what "chase trading cards" are. If "chase" is a product name or a player name, then you could put "Chase Card" in that slot.

After you save the name of your attribute (the name of your drop list), you would next add all of the items to the list, one at a time.

Below I have cards with names "Card #1" and "Card #2". Use your own card names as they appear on the cards themselves.  First, I clicked "Create your own", typed "Card #1" in the slot, and clicked "Add". Then I clicked "Create your own" again, and typed "Card #2". I have not yet clicked the "Add" button to save that second one.

Unified Lister - Variation - OptionUnified Lister - Variation - Option

This same screen allows you to drag your options around to rearrange them if you wish

Once you have created and ordered your list, click the "Continue" button at the bottom.

The next screen will be the area where you can add your default photo for the parent record and the images for each one of the options in your list.

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

Ah, yes! Thanks for the detailed info. I was wondering how other sellers added variations with 'U-Pick' drop down box.

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

Just made my first one...https://www.ebay.com/itm/203799182339   how does it look? any improvements that I should make? Is this listing with 4 items considered one listing to eBay? It was 'free' as I have many free store listings to use, but if I was out of free listings, would the fee be .30, or 4X.30?

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

Do I need to add 'price is per each card', or is it understood that the $99.99 is for each card, and not all 4?

There isn't anything in the description describing what you are selling.

It'll be one listing, but it'll count as 4 against your listing limit.

Have a great day.

Thanks for the (even more) detailed explanation! I'm going to make some 'tweaks' to my listings, and then go make more listings. Thanks again!

Re: How to create a Listing with variations?

Great instructions! Is there a way to Bulk add items (Options) if I have a list of 500 cards to sell and I don't want to create 500 listings?

Thanks
