Concern about Promoted Listings and Algorithm

I recently started ebay with moderate success that I'm pleased is better than I expected. My concern isn't one of sales throughput, I have a micro store with some valuable items, with many that aren't and I understand that facet; as well as constantly working titles, item specifics and categories, turning listing over through End/Sell-similar, ect.
I last had a bout of sales leading up to the week before Christmas, and I understood it drops because credit cards are maxed out/items can't be delivered before the 25th/people are buying more New packaged items or gifts, ect.
Then after 6 days I only get a notification to Promote Listings. I ignore it and less than 12 hours later, and literally overnight while I was sleeping, I get 3 sales from 3 people, all varied in category. Right before Christmas.
I know another human's decision is necessary for a sale, but it's like I'm being unhidden once the algorithm realizes it can't get me to promote a listing.
So my question isn't on how to get more sales, but rather does anyone find this concerning, or is it just an odd coincidence?
I don't want to do promoted listings or be strong-armed into it if that is the case that is happening.
