I sold an item very recently. The model number is on the auction page a total of 6 times.
Shortly after the buyer used buy it now to purchase my item they requested me cancelling the order and refunding the buyer because they say they needed a different model number.
They disregarded the six times the model number is on the auction page and still bought my item knowing it didn't match the model number that they had for the replacement part they needed.
They are a newish Ebay member with zero feedback.
I am not on ebay to coddle little children through their experiences on ebay.
The buyer is an adult and made a bad decision and threatened me with a chargeback dispute and negative feedback.
I am worried about neither.
Purchasing the wrong item is 100% the buyers fault.
I will not pay for their decision to knowingly buy an item they cannot use.
The buyer has admitted in messages sent through ebay that they need a different model number.
People are unwilling to take responsibility for their mistakes and will do everything they can to try to make someone else pay for it.
Not if I have my say about it.
What do y'all think?

Yes, you will pay. Cancel the transaction unless you want to end up paying return shipping on top of the refund. If they file a chargeback they'll get a refund alright and you'll be charged $20 for the privilege.
eBay doesn't read messages or decide case by case. Your no returns policy is really meaningless if the buyer wants a refund.

You'll save yourself problems and money later if you just cancel the order as buyer requested.

Why not just cancel it. Sell it to someone that wants/needs it. You haven't paid anything to ship it, but it will cost you postage both ways to get the item back if they file a dispute.

Why create problems for your self??
If you ship it: well there options can be devastating to your metrics (and pocket book): such as item not as described case; or worse a charge back (paymnet dispute): that can even cost you more...
In other words: step back, relax; cancel and relist.... it saves time and money by doing so:
Oh and put em on your blocked bidders list if you never want to deal with them again.

You'll have forgotten about it in two days. Cancel order and block him.

How is you losing your fees, shipping, and possibly the item as well going to make a difference to this buyer? This platform offers a money back guarantee to all buyers, so you will lose in the end. You offer free shipping to your buyers, so this buyer will not be out anything, unlike you. You want to stand on your principles over someone telling you before you ship, they've changed their mind, yet you insist on shipping anyways. One stands on their principles when there is an opportunity to show the other person they are incorrect, but only YOU are losing out here. There will be no cost to your buyer hence no 'lesson' for them to learn....

bbl/cancel/refund/relist
Nothing lost but a few minutes of your time. I can do what that buyer requested in less than 2 minutes.
Nose....... spite........ face..........
