I returned an item to the seller using the ebay provided prepaid mailing label. I started the case on 27 August 2021 and received notice via the help chat line that the seller had received the return on 31 August 2021 and that I would receive a refund shortly. No refund received and ebay says the case is closed and I am not entitled to a refund because ebay received the "tracking data" for the return after the 10 September deadline.
What is this about and what has happened that makes ebay nearly impossible to deal with?

Recently @wren5 eBay hasn't been tracking their own eBay-issued return tracking numbers. Then after the due date, your case just closes without a refund.
To solve this, leave a private message for eBay on Facebook here with your name and so on, give eBay that return tracking number, and ask for your refund.
Otherwise, file a "credit not processed" chargeback with your card issuer and provide your return tracking number to get your refund.
